Most Friday nights you’ll find me in front of the TV, glued to TLC's Say Yes to the Dress. The Say Yes to the Dress Atlanta version isn’t nearly as good as the original from Kleinfeld Bridal in New York, but there’s still plenty of drama to keep a brain-dead newspaper editor entertained at the end of a six-day work week.
So when Amanda Garber called then emailed a week or so ago, she got my attention. Starting Thursday, you can Say Yes to the Dress … at Costco. Yep, you read that right. Brentwood’s discount warehouse is turning into a bridal boutique for four days. Who would have thunk it.
It seems “couture designer Kirstie Kelly” has partnered with Costco to bring her Signature line of “sophisticated and feminine” wedding dresses to the Seaboard Lane store.
Amanda tells me a big portion of the store is being repurposed for the sale. Let’s be real: Nothing this exciting has happened at Costco since Sarah Palin, the then- former VP candidate who can’t quite make up her mind if she’s now a candidate for the top job, visited last year. For Palin, the store set up an area that had a true presidential feel. Wonder if they can pull off a Kleinfeldesque waiting room set this year?
In true Costco fashion, choices will be limited – the store will have 12 “exclusive gowns” ranging in size from 2 to 24 and in price from $700 to $1600. Amanda says professional bridal consultants will be on hand to help brides to be in the “private, salon-style fitting area.” I wonder if Randy or Lori or Monte will be in the wings to break up any fights or to tell the bossy future mother-in-law or opinionated maid of honor to get in line.
The gowns will be shipped to the brides’ homes within two weeks from the fitting.
I’m trying to decide who to send to Costco to actually cover the show: Mila Grigg, our Looking your Best fashion columnist? Jodi Rall, our In the Bubble writer who’s always looking for events like this to have some fun with? Or should I just call my good friend Mary Hance, Ms. Cheap? We’re due for a lunch at nearby Jasmine anyway.
OK, who are we kidding here? I’m going to cover it of course. Because I always Say Yes to the Dress.
