 RHS, BHS each have individual champion

Ravenwood qualified 12 wrestlers, including region champion Harrison Hawthorne, for this weekend's state individual wrestling tournament and won the Region 6 team title for the first time Saturday.

Brentwood sophomore Gabe Hamilton pinned RHS sophomore Tanner Reynolds at 4:23 to capture the 135-pound crown. Six other Bruins made the state field as BHS fourth in team points at the regional at Overton High.

Hawthorne, a senior captain, won 10-9 in the final seconds of the 215-pound championship over Bruins junior Nick Coffey.

"This was a complete team championship, with every one of our guys placing and scoring big points," Raptors Coach Josh Peck said.

RHS sophomore Jacob Freeman (119), senior Cody Stewart (189) and senior Dylan Yeager (285) all lost close decisions in their finals to also finish in second place.

The Raptors, who placed third in the state duals after winning the earlier duals region, had five wrestlers in the finals and seven in the consolation finals.  RHS scored 227.5 points to runner-up Independence's 186.5.

Ravenwood didn't place in the top four of only two of the 14 weight classes. The TSSAA state wrestling tournament is Thursday-Saturday at the Williamson County Ag Expo in Franklin.

Also qualfiying were for the Raptors were third-place junior Kyle Keuhenhold (112), senior Michael Gray (140), sophomore Grant Jones (152) and junior Jonathan Mabry (160), plus fourth-place sophomore Jacob Travis (103), junior Jack Finnegan (125) and senior Ryan Churchill (130).

Other wrestlers making state for the Bruins are seniors Ben Smith (119) and Powell Newbern (130) who took third, as well as and senior Juan Garcia (145), senior Chris Hoop (171) and junior Demetrics Brown, who finished fourth.
