Woodland Middle School’s Shawnee team visited the Country Music Hall of Fame as a culmination to their songwriting unit. After a tour of the museum, students enjoyed the Words and Music program which involved a session with Nashville songwriters Jason Duke and Gary Culley.

These artists chose some of the students’ songs to put to music. Students also enjoyed a question and answering session to learn more about songwriting during the visit last month.

Other recent happenings at Woodland Middle:

  • Sixth-grader Matthew Downey won the Geography Bee, and will be proceeding on further in state competition.  Placing second was Braden Birdwell, and third place was Wyatt Klooster.
  • The following students were picked for the 2011-12 All Mid-State Band:  Gold Band – Minjung Ma, flute; Travis Burhart, clarinet and bass clarinet; and Taylor Winkler, baritone.  Silver Band – Dustin Lin, clarinet. 7th-8th Grade Bands – Thomas Vines, trumpet; Ashley Page, clarinet;  and Eric Lu, clarinet.
  • Selected as December Students of the Month were: Seth Erickson, Mac Toman, Delaney Thompson. Carolina Williams, Adam Bednowitz, Maria Espinosa, and Drew Hughes. These Warrior student citizens did the right thing and assisted others willingly.
  • The Beta Club collected almost 600 toys for children in Williamson County during its toy drive before the holiday break.
  • Joe Christy was chosen as Woodland Middle School’s Teacher of the Year.
  • The Cherokees and Shawnees joined together for an afternoon of festivities on Mount Olympus on Dec. 19. All Greek Gods, monsters, and heroes were present from Zeus and Pandora to Hades and Medusa. The class got to enjoy Greek foods before introducing their characters to the class.
  • Mathletes competed in the 2nd Math Olympiad recently. The contest consisted of five questions. First place was Ray Lee from Ms. Cook’s math class. Second place was shared by Barbara Xiong, Patrick Fallon, Eric Lu, Rija Jain and Angel Asirvathan.
  • Takuya Sato won the boys 12s division in the Malik Tabet Tennis Academy Christmas Grand Prix Novice Tournament played at Austin Peay.
  • Author Tim Green spoke to students about his 3 steps to success during the Book Fair. The Book Fair heped donate 1,286 books to Book ‘Em, and the $2,000 profit will be used for library books as well as an author presenter for next year.
  • Yearbook order forms have been mailed home, and additional copies of the order form are available in the front office. Yearbook prices have increased to $45.
  • WMS will sell healthy drinks and snacks for any student staying after school for a sport, club or activity. Snacks will be sold from 2:50-3 p.m. Cold PowerAde or water is $1, and snacks are 50 cents.
