Adolescence can be a thrilling, yet bewildering time—for both teens and their parents. Learning about teenage development and behaviors can help parents nurture their children’s strengths and guide them through the rough spots.

Williamson Medical Center will offer a free, interactive lunch-and-learn for parents of teens and pre-teens, providing guidance on topics such as adolescence, individuality, rebellion and recognizing teens’ most important needs.

The hour-long presentation will be at noon Thursday, Oct. 20, in Williamson Medical Center Meeting Rooms A, B and C. Phyllis Osborn, certified positive discipline educator, will draw from years of experience as a mother, entrepreneur and educator, as well as provide tips from Jane Nelson’s popular book Positive Discipline for Teenagers. Nelson is a licensed marriage, family and child counselor.

“When my 17-year-old daughter was about to graduate from high school, I realized we were disconnected in a way which I could not seem to undo,” Osborn says. “My relationship with my daughter changed when I changed, and now I am committed to sharing that knowledge to bridge the gap between parents and their children, ultimately building a stronger connection and mutual respect.”

The lunch-and-learn is open to the public. Reserve a space by calling WMC’s Employee Assistance Program at 615.435.5300 and leaving your name and phone number. Reservation deadline is Tuesday, Oct. 18. Attendees should bring their lunch if they wish to eat during the presentation.
