Stress can cause both short- and long-term changes to your body and mind. Studies have linked chronic stress with a weakened immune system, as well as cardiovascular problems such as hypertension, coronary heart disease and stroke.

People who are stressed also tend to do things that make their bodies less healthy and more vulnerable to the effects of stress, such as eating fatty foods, smoking or drinking alcohol more, all of which raise the risk for disease.

Williamson Medical Center will offer a lunch-and-learn to help attendees learn ways to better manage stress. The hour-long presentation will be at noon Tuesday, May 3, in Williamson Medical Center Meeting Rooms A, B and C.

Integrative Life Center executive director Holly Cook, L.P.C., M.H.S.P., will share mindfulness techniques she’s assembled during her 25 years experience.

“Mindfulness techniques train your mind to become less responsive to stress and readjust your mind so that your baseline level of stress is lower,” Cook says. “Practicing techniques like mindfulness, meditation and relaxation enable you to maintain a calm and peaceful feeling throughout your day.

" Participants will become more efficient in their everyday lives and better equipped to deal with life’s stresses and challenges.”

The free lunch-and-learn is open to the public. Reserve a space by calling WMC’s Employee Assistance Program at 615.435.5300 and leaving your name and phone number. Reservation deadline is Monday, May 1. Attendees should bring their lunch if they wish to eat during the presentation.
