Who does not love Michael Jackson? OK, so maybe a few. But at least an estimated 5,000 who do turned out in force to hear Who’s Bad, the Michael Jackson tribute band play here Sunday night.
Claiming the “ultimate MJ experience,” the evening didn’t let me down. From the looks of it, most of thousands of others who crammed into Crockett Park felt the same way.
You know who else the crowd became a fan of? Local contractor Tom Ford. He had to be the most popular man in Brentwood. He and his lovely bride handed out fans to the masses in Eddy Arnold Amphitheater. Seriously though, thank you Tom Ford Construction Company LLC. Ford’s company is one of the concert series’ sponsors this year and without sponsors, these great family fun evenings might not happen.
Going back stage I had to ask Joseph Bell, one of the two lead singers, what his favorite MJ song was to perform. The resemblance uncanny, he looked at me and smiled “Billie Jean.”
Mayor Paul Webb, on hand to kick off the concert, told me, “I enjoyed the whole Thriller experience.” Oh, Mr. Mayor, now every time I think of you, “Thriller” will be running through my head.
Have to say that he does have great taste, though, as ‘Thriller” remains the best-selling album of all times. My friend and Zumba teacher Rebecca Trauscht shares our mayor’s love of “Thriller” and has even taught classes in October teaching “the dance” for Halloween.
Rebecca was out of town last weekend, however, and it was a shame because Sunday was her birthday and this girl is a huge MJ fan! Her favorite memory is attending the Jackson Victory Tour in Chicago at the old Sox stadium back in high school, she has told me.
City Commissioner Jill Burgin (and former columnist for BHP) shared, “My absolute favorite is ‘PYT.’”
Yes, Pretty Young Thing is a great one. I asked Jill’s own Ken doll if he and his commissioner wife would be doing any dancing. Tim Burgin answered with a smile, ‘Ah, no.” Oh well. Jill still looked like a PYT sitting up on the hill watching us dance.
Thinking I was funny, had to ask Channel 4 meteorologist Lisa Spencer, “Hey, couldn’t you order up a better forecast than hot and humid?” Like nobody ever say’s that to her, right? Being a good sport, she still talked to me. Her favorite MJ song is “Man in the Mirror,” she said, and she even pretended to laugh at my attempt at humor.
Lisa, for that you are my favorite weather girl and RHS mom too.
Have I mentioned that there was dancing? With our fearless leader Maggie Pelton leading the way to the dance floor, we girls were on a dancing mission.
Speaking of moves, Lisa Dennison was having some fun on the dance floor. Seems Lisa got off a flight at 5 p.m. and headed to the park just after 6 to join in the fun.
Oh, the look of horror on my 12-year-old son’s face as he and his posse of friends danced.
Wish my mom had been as cool as me, son. You are lucky to have a mom who dances like nobody is looking, I wanted to say.
Can you believe he made his friends leave the dance floor? (“Too embarrassing to watch, Mom.”)
It was their loss as the band began to play “Beat It.” We knew all the moves Rebecca had taught us. Oh, this party was in full force now.
We stayed until the bitter end we clapped and yelled for “encore!”
Another great night at the concert in the park came to an end. And yes, it was another successful night of embarrassing my children.
My job is done.
