WHAT'S UP WITH THAT: Dolphin Club property

More than one BHP reader has emailed or called us in recent days asking if we knew “What’s Up” with the former Dolphin Club property on Wilson Pike and Old Smyrna Road. The former swim and racquet club was purchased several years ago by members of Calvary Chapel Brentwood that currently meets at the FiftyForward Martin Center on Heritage Way.

The church has had the property listed but the For Sale sign was recently removed, leading to the “What’s up with that?” queries.

“We got approval for a 21-story building,” Assistant Pastor R.J. Granda told us when we called to inquire.

Not! April Fools, though that IS what he said, proving even a minister can have a sense of humor. He quickly shared the real story: The church is between Realtors.

“It’s still on the market and it’s still on a nationwide listing service,” he said of the corner lot that still is home to the once-bustling community swimming pool and tennis courts. “We’ve had a lot of interest lately but nothing solid.”

Calvary Chapel now has 175 members. Though it would love to build on the property, “short of a miracle – which we’re hoping for – we probably will not be building there,” Granda said.  “We would love to be there, we would, but I don’t know how that’s going to happen.

“We’re actively trying to sell it.”
