By BARBARA NOWAK and BEVERLY PITTMAN The Saucy Sisters, for Brentwood Home Page Every time we hear the pop of a cork, we comment that the sound is “music to our ears.” And often, after consuming the bottle’s contents, we break into song. Our a cappella missteps notwithstanding, wine and music have a lot in common. Just look at the artists who’ve come out with their own wines (or at least put their names on the labels).
What would a groundhog drink?
We have high hopes that Punxsutawney Phil will not see his shadow next Thursday, Feb. 2. It’s been a mild winter, so we’re predicting this endearing rodent will stay above ground, ensuring an early spring.
Of course we came up with this prediction after consuming our new Sparkling Pomegranate Cocktail. Phil doesn’t require our cocktail to make his predictions. But we’ve heard he takes one sip of the "elixir of life" a secret recipe that is served him every summer at the Groundhog Picnic. It’s said to prepare him for winter slumber and magically extend his life.
While we can’t promise that our “elixir” recipe will add years to your life, we will say that the drink will add life to your years. (And – who knows – with all the health properties of pomegranate juice, maybe it will add a couple years!)
Sparkling Pomegranate Cocktail for Two
4 ounces pomegranate juice
3 ounces pear nectar
1 ounces orange curaçao
4 ounces sparkling wine
Combine pomegranate juice, pear nectar and orange curaçao in a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake and strain into two large martini glasses. Top with sparkling wine.
While we’re imagining a toast to our spring tulips and whistling* Dixie with Phil, we’re wishing you a magical February!
*Who knew that groundhogs whistle?
Cheers!
Barbara and Beverly
