Wade, Lazas help BHS boys to runner-up finish

Holly Van Grinsven won four events to help Brentwood capture the girls championship at the Scott Hartman Relays by 50 points, while the Bruins were runner-up on the boys side.

BHS senior Steve Wade easily won both throwing events with a shot put of 58 feet, 9.25 inches and a discus toss of 157 feet. Bruin teammate James Lazas had the winning long jump at 21 feet, 1 inch, and was second in the 300 hurdles and third in the 110 hurdles and pole vault.

Grinsven was first in the 100-meter dash, long jump, and both the 100 and 300 hurdles, scoring 40 of the Lady Bruins' 141 points. Kelly Bickel won the 200 and finished second behind Grinsven in the long jump and the 300 hurdles.

Amber Sudzius (118 feet, 3 inches) and Amy Nelson also went 1-2 for the Lady Bruins in the discus throw, and  Brentwood's Abby Vorhaus won the pole vault at 9 feet.

Brentwood Academy's Abbie Whitehurst took the 400, with Ravenwood's Halie Lemasters finishing runner-up. The BA girls also ran first in the 4x100 relay and second in the 4x200.

Erika Peoples was runner-up for RHS in both the 800 and 1600. Austin Barrett was third in the 100 hurdles and ran the anchor leg of the Lady Raptors' third-place 4x400 team behind Elece Gray, Lemasters and Maddie Lindley.

In the boys competition, Brentwood Academy's Josh Davies won the 300 hurdles, finished second in the 110 hurdles and third in the long jump. The Eagles' Woody Baron had the second-best discus throw, and Graham Shuler was third in shot put.

Ravenwood's Zach Gilroy had the highest pole vault at 12 feet, 6 inches, while Brentwood's Eric Hoff and Lazas went 2-3.

Stephen Saucerman was runner-up in the 800 for the Raptors. Gilroy also cleared 6 feet for third in the high jump, and Cameron Brown was third in discus.

Brentwood's Paul Stuart was runner-up in the 3,200-meter run, and Patrick Kellett took third in the 400.

The BHS boys also placed third all but one relay, finishing fourth in the 4x100.

Ravenwood and Brentwood Academy finished in the top five in team scores for both boys and girls. The Williamson County Championships are next Monday and Tuesday at Battle Ground Academy.
