Several Kindersport athletes competed in the heptathalon and decathalon at the AAU Club Championship at the ESPN Wide World of Sports in Orlando, Fla. Monday and Tuesday.
All six athletes qualified to compete in the AAU Junior Olympics in Norfolk, Va. on July 31 and Aug. 1. Several other athletes who train with track and field coach Gary Kinder will compete in individual events later this week.
Competing in her first heptathalon, Abbie McKinney of Brentwood, a senior at Franklin Road Academy, placed second in the Young Women's division. She has competed numerous other times in the pentathalon, most recently placing second in the Division II state competition.
Abbie was the only Kindersport heptathalete.
Jake Lazas, a Brentwood High School junior, placed second in the Intermediate Men's Division of the decathalon. It was the first time he had competed in any of the 10 decathlon events.
BHS sophomore Eric Hoff and placed fourth in the Intermediate Men's Division. Close behind was Zach Gilroy, a Ravenwood sophomore, who placed sixth.
Wade Comes Up big in Shot at AAU Meet
In other track news, Brentwood High School senior and AAA state shot put champion Steve Wade competed in the AAU Section 5 National Qualifier meet in Knoxville over the weekend.
Wade, who has thrown in Puerto Rico at the Caribbean Invitational and in Oregon at the Nike Track Nationals this summer, won both the shot put and discus events at the AAU meet.
He won the discus event on Saturday with a "safe" final throw of 160-4 after fouling on his previous attempts. The following day, he came up big in the shot put event, throwing for a new personal record of 58-10.50.
Although his performance qualifies him to advance to the AAU National meet in Norfolk Wade instead plans to begin practicing football this week and skip the national meet. |
