Brentwood Home Page news reports Brentwood Academy girls and boys team broke seven meet records at the Division II Middle Region track and field meet, sending Coach Charlie Harper off to his last state tournament in style.
Franklin Road Academy’s Abbie McKinney, a Brentwood resident, also captured both girls hurdling events (15.07 and 45.66) as well as the triple jump (36-01.50). She also qualified for the state pentathlon earlier and finished second in long jump Friday to Jordan Lavender of USN, who set a new region mark of 19-02.50.
Both Brentwood Academy squads won the team championships while setting more records than any school previously in the region.
It was a rare, magical night that will be remembered for a long time. It seemed as if every athlete was infused with a focus and determination that brought out their best effort. Race after race would finish with the announcement that another meet record had been broken.
Senior hurdler Bryson Lillard, who is two-time defending DII state champion in both the 110 and 300 events, set a new boys 110-meter hurdles mark and also won the 300.
Victor Caro also broke the long jump record, while Eagles relay teams established new record times in the girls 4x100 and 4x200 and the boys 4x100, 4x200 and 4x400.
Vanderbilt football signee Derek King won both the 200 and 400, and Josh Pleasant was fastest in the 100-meter dash.
Josh Davies and Graham Shuler won the shot put and discus, respectively, while Shuler also qualified in shot and Amos Mason in discus.
Davies, who earlier qualified for the decathlon, finished second to Lillard in both hurdles to make state and Phillip Booker also qualified in the 110 hurdles. Lillard broke a record held by Davies brother, Ben, set while at BA in 2007.
Will Reynolds was second in pole vault. BA also qualified its other boys relay team in the 4x800.
Freshman Garrett Bull made the 3200 field in fourth, but twin brother Andrew just missed out in fifth by less than 8 seconds. Sprinters D’montre Wade and Radio Annorr (100) and Carlos Calloway (200) also made state, as did Zeno Dupree in the 400.
The Lady Eagles had the runner-up in the 100 with Abbie Whitehurst and the 200 with Breanna Tate and the Whitehurst, Tate and twin sister Deanna all made state in both sprints. The girls qualified their 4x400 and 4x800 relays as well.
Franklin Road Academy track coach David Tucker recognized BA’s Harper and applauded his 35 years coaching.
"He was an inspiration as a coach and as a Christian example,” Tucker said. “His success as a coach has been unparalleled in Tennessee, and his retirement will leave a large hole in the track program."
The Lady Eagles outscored Harpeth Hall 149.50 to 130.50, while the Bruins outdueled region meet host Montgomery Bell Academy 248-218.
The top eight distances or time in the state qualified for the Spring Fling DII championships, with the top four mostly qualifying except for BA in the girls 800 and both boys and girls shot put.
The Lady Eagles 4x100 team broke a meet record with a time of 48:59.
