There aren’t many musicals that combine classical Broadway showtunes with a fresh and inventive story. Crazy For You is that rare feat, blending familiar Gershwin favorites with a wildly creative take on love and life in the American West. Towne Centre Theatre’s production, which opens on June 10, promises an evening of toe-tapping delight.

The show follows Bobby Child (played by Randy Dierkes), the son of a prominent New York banker who defies the wishes of his mother (Jean Hevel) and instead dreams of being a Broadway performer. When he is sent on family business to foreclose on The Gaiety Theater in Deadrock, Nev., he meets Polly Baker (Mary-Claire Lutz), a charmingly irascible woman and daughter of the theater’s owner, and guarantees that he will save the Gaiety.

Though set in the 1930s, the characters are vivid representations of everyday personalities.

“What I love about Polly is that she is headstrong and independent, and she doesn’t let what people think about her change her mind,” says Lutz, a rising junior at Belmont. “I love the strength that she has.”

Dierkes, a musical theatre major at Florida State University, feels the same way about Bobby Child. “Bobby is such an incredible ball of energy. He is a passionate individual, and I think people can identify with that incredible spirit.”

Karen Himelrick directs the spirited cast that, in addition to Lutz, Dierkes, and Hevel, includes Kyle Torti, Kory Krikac, Natalie Rankin, W. Preston Crook, Scott Hiney, Kari Cherie Smith, Briana Bishop, Morgan Mullen, Justin Boyd, Cary Smith, Jim Himelrick, Dustin Greenleaf, Christian Randall, Molly Thomas, Katy Fitzsimmons, Matt Grimes, and Diann Meriwether.

Crazy For You runs June 10 through July 2. Thursday, Friday, and Saturday performances begin at 8 PM. Sunday matinees start at 2:30 PM.

Tickets are now on sale through the TCT box office, 221-1174 or via the theatre's website at www.townecentretheatre.com. They are $20 for adults; $18 for seniors age 60 and over, and $16 for children.
