Ravenwood High School Ravenwood High School opened in the fall of 2002. With an enrollment of 1,930 for the 2010-2011 school year, administration, staff and parents are intent on working together to secure Ravenwood’s top-ranked status. The school’s current composite ACT score is 24.6. Ravenwood offers 16 Advanced Placement courses and has a three-year average of a 71 percent passing rate on the AP exams.
The school is equipped with 51 classrooms, 7 computer labs and 10 science labs. Five additional classrooms in the career and technology focus support students interested in health science, with an adjoining hospital room, TV production with a studio, graphic arts, computer-aided drafting and a business center for retail and banking classes.
The Media Center holds two smaller computer labs for private but supervised research. The Fine Arts department includes band, chorus, art and theater, as well as a 450-seat auditorium, stage and dressing rooms.
In the athletic wing, two gyms provide for wellness and PE classes and serve as practice areas for basketball, volleyball, wrestling, cheerleading, dance, JROTC and winter guard. A football stadium, baseball, softball, soccer fields and tennis courts are provided for the outdoor sports. Two additional practice fields serve the school as well.
Ravenwood excels in academics, arts and athletics, even as the challenge to provide for an ever-growing student population continues. The Freshman Mentoring Program supports ninth-graders by sending trained juniors and seniors to freshman homerooms to guide them in RHS’ student expectations. A Freshman Academy ensures academic strength at the ninth-grade level, as those teachers share students within and among the disciplines to create a teaming effect.
The mascot is the raptor, a bird of prey represented by the red-tailed hawk. Principal Dr. Pam Vaden says the keen vision of the hawk is a perfect representation for the forward-looking learning community.
