Brentwood High’s boys doubles team of juniors Alex Howard and Drake Hernandez was defeated in the quarterfinal round in an extremely tight, three-set match at the Spring Fling state championships in Murfreesboro.
Howard-Hernandez fell 4-6, 7-6, 10-8 to seniors Conner Knox and Owen Rockett, whose Tennessee High team defeated defending champ BHS in Wednesday’s team final.
Caballero, who won state doubles last year with current junior Madison Stankevich, had to default in Tuesday’s team championship victory because she’s been ill with mononucleousis. But having to cover only half of the court, she was able to win two matches Thursday with this year’s partner Hao, a freshman.
Karl, recently ranked No. 1 nationally in boys 16s, made Friday’s 9 a.m. high school finals against Science Hill junior Michael Chen, who he beat in last year’s semifinals.

Karl only gave up three games in his quarterfinals and semifinals Thursday in the matches at Old Fort Park. He defeated Hendersonville junior Matthew Heinrich 6-0, 6-2 in the opener and won 6-0, 6-1 in the semis over Walker Valley senior Ben Watson, who had rallied to win 0-6, 6-2, 13-11 in his quarterfinal.
Caballero-Hao didn’t lose a game at all in their two matches, putting bagels on Cleveland seniors Esha Rock and Kelsey Cantrell in the quarters and Siegel junior Alison Todd and sophomore Jacquelyn Leeman in the semi.
The Lady Raptors duo will also face a Science Hill opponent in the finals, sophomore Katie Deal and senior Mary Grace Birchfield. Their championship match starts at 11 a.m. at Old Fort Park.
In Class A-AA, Christ Presbyterian sophomore Sydney Campbell will also go for her second consecutive girls singles title, at 11 a.m., after leading CPA to a repeat team championship. And CPA sophomore Katherine Schofield and freshman Morgan Atkinson will play for the state doubles crown.
