The Lady Raptors tennis team has dedicated the season to the late A.W. Speake, the school's coach who died last fall. They're wearing pink uniforms with the initial A.W. on them in his honor.
 

Teams sweep sectional foes to make Spring Fling tourney in Murfreesboro

The Ravenwood girls tennis team and the Brentwood boys squad will be back at the state tournament to defend their Class AAA championships after making quick work of the opponents in Wednesday’s sectional matches.

The Lady Raptors won 4-0 over Rossview in Clarksville, while the Bruins won by the same score against host Hendersonville at Drakes Creek Park.

RHS junior Lauren Caballero and freshman Iris Hao, who had already won region to qualify for state in doubles, teamed up for an 8-0 victory. Caballero then had to make a trip to the doctor’s office due to a sinus infection.

Caroline Morelli and Kayla Anthony also won in doubles 8-1. In singles, Kelly Rains didn’t give up a set, 6-0, 6-0 and Vivian Hao swept through her match, 6-2, 6-0.

The Brentwood boys team also qualified its doubles team of juniors Alex Howard and Drake Hernandez, who won the region over defending regionchamps Nikhil Sharma-Nishant Biswas of RHS.

 

The team tournament runs Tuesday-Wednesday and the singles and doubles Thursday-Friday at Old Fort Park in Murfreesboro at next week's TSSAA Spring Fling state championships. The Lady Raptors will open Tuesday against Science Hill in the four-team tourney that also includes Siegel and White Station.

Ravenwood sophomore Sean Karl, ranked No. 1 in the nation in boys 16s now, will also defend his AAA boys single state crown. Karl draws Hendersonville junior Matthew Heinrich in the first round Thursday.

Caballero-Hao takes on the Cleveland senior duo of Esha Rock-Kelsey Cantrell in their opener, while Howard-Hernandez plays Tennessee High senior partners Conner Knox-Owen Rockett.
