Brentwood Home Page news reports Ravenwood High School’s girls tennis team repeated as Class AAA state champions at the TSSAA Spring Fling, despite No. 1 singles player Lauren Caballero retiring from her match in the first set due to illness.
The Brentwood boys team, also AAA defending champs, weren’t able to retain their state crown by falling 4-2 in the finals to Tennessee High of Bristol, Tenn.

Caballero, a junior at Ravenwood, was treated for a sinus infection last week but then was diagnosed with mononucleosis. She won her team semifinal match Tuesday but didn’t have enough stamina to continue in the finals Wednesday at Old Fort Park in Murfreesboro when the opening set went to 6-5.
The four other Lady Raptors singles players, however, swept through their matches to defeat White Station in the championship match for the second straight year. RHS won 4-1 behind wins from Iris Hao, Madison Stankevich, Vivian Hao and Kelly Rains.
"That is the first time I have ever had to default a match and it obviously was not easy for me," Caballero said. "I was playing one of my good friends, so if I had to default to anyone, I am glad it was to Kayla (Jones).
"My team knew going into the match that I was most likely not going to be able to make it through the full match, and so they really stepped up and took it into their own hands. Each one of them had a different match on their hands and each of them battled through perfectly. It shows how it is truly a team sport."
The Lady Raptors dedicated the season to the late A.W. Speake, the school’s only previous tennis coach, who collapsed and died last fall. The Ravenwood players wore pink tennis uniforms with the initial A.W. on them in honor of Speake, because he had proudly worn a pink T-shirt the team had made during last spring’s state championship run.
Caballero, who won the AAA state doubles title with Stankevich last season, plans to play in Thursday’s girls doubles quarterfinals with new partner Iris Hao.
Ravenwood sophomore Sean Karl, recently ranked No. 1 nationally in boys 16s, also begins defense of his Class AAA boys singles title Thursday.
Brentwood High juniors Alex Howard and Drake Hernandez will compete in the boys AAA doubles quarterfinals.
In the boys team championship, Howard and Hernandez lost to Conner Knox and Nic Wilson at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively. Ryan Satterfield dropped a 7-5 first set before falling at No. 3 to Owen Rockett.
Evan Borowski and Michael Arguello picked up victories at No. 4 and 5, but Wilson-Seth Buckmaster clinched the championship with an 8-3 win over Borowski-Arguello in doubles.
Howard and Hernadez now face Knox and Rockett in their opening doubles match Thursday in the state individual tournament.
In Class A-AA, Christ Presbyterian girls also won their second straight state title, 4-3 over Chattanooga Christian. Sydney Campbell, also the defending singles champion, and Katherine Schofield won singles and also won respectively at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles.
Singles and doubles quarterfinals and semifinals will be played Thursday at Old Fort Park, with the finals on Friday.
