Brentwood boys and Ravenwood girls both play for state high school team tennis titles today at Old Fort Park in Murfreesboro as part of the TSSAA Spring Fling championships.
Ravenwood's girls, with a 4-0 victory over Cleveland in the semis, take on White Station in the 11:30 a.m. girls team finals.
BHS swept three-time defending champ Science Hill of Johnson City 4-0 in a semifinal Monday. The Bruins play in the finals at 1:30 p.m. against McMinn County, a 4-3 winner over Germantown Houston.
In Monday's semifinal, Brentwood's Drake Hernandez won a first-set tiebreaker in defeating Jordan Eddy of Science Hill 7-6 (3), 6-3. Loukas Peterson beat Hayden Holbrook 6-1, 6-1, Ryan Satterfield won 6-3, 6-4 over Austin Herrin 6-3, 6-4, and Evan Borowski defeated Ryan Becker 6-1, 6-2.
Individual singles and doubles play begins on Thursday, with Ravenwood's nationally ranked freshman Sean Karl in the singles quarterfinals. Ravenwood also has a doubles teach in the boys and girls quarterfinals.
Softball
Ravenwood's girls softball team, making their first appearance in the TSSAA state tournament, get a second chance today after falling 9-1 to Jefferson County in the opener on Monday.
The Lady Raptors (33-17) play a Class AAA losers bracket game at 10 a.m. today against Brighton at McKnight Field No. 1 in Murfreesboro. The winner will advance to a 10 a.m. game on Thursday, while the loser goes home. Bright also lost 9-1 Monday, to Riverdale.
Jefferson County (32-12) scored the first two runs on Monday in the third inning after a two-out error, but RHS pulled within 2-1 in the top of the fourth. Kayla Green reached on an error, advanced to second on a groundout and scored on a groundout by Lakin Singleton.
But the Raptors fell apart in the bottom of the fourth by giving up two errors plus a hit batter in a six-run inning for the Lady Patriots. Only four of the nine runs were earned for RHS pitcher Ashley Beyke.
Winning pitcher Whitney Leon gave up only two hits to the Raptors and struck out six. She also went 4-for-4 at the plate with a double and three runs scored.
In the bottom of the fourth, Jefferson County's Taylor Anne Bates had an RBI single, before Hayley Taylor reached on a one-out error. Patriots pitcher Whitney Leon drove home Bates, Haley Nelson was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and then Taylor and Leon scored on a fielder's choice. Jessie Smith had a groundout RBI, then Morgan Smith reached on an error. West, who started the inning with a single, then singled another run.
Baseball
Brentwood Academy only needs two victories to capture a third straight state baseball crown after winning 10-6 over Memphis Briarcrest Christian in the Division II-AA tournament on Monday.
The Eagles advanced into today's 12:30 p.m. winners bracket game against Memphis Christian Brothers in the four-team, double-elimination tourney, being played at Wilson Central.
Today's winner will advance into the championship game at noon Thursday. A second championship game will follow, if necessary.
The loser will drop into the losers bracket for a 6 p.m. game tonight against the winner of today's MUS-Briarcrest game at 10 a.m.
CBHS defeated Memphis University School 8-1 in the other opener on Monday.
