Brentwood Home Page news reports It's deep in May and several of the city's spring sports athletes are still competing. Some have already qualified for next week's Spring Fling high school championships in Murfreesboro, but others need one final step to make state in baseball, softball, soccer, tennis or track championships. Here's where you can see them in action and cheer them on.
BASEBALL
Brentwood Academy, which opened defense of its three-time state championship with a two-game sweep of Father Ryan, moves into a second-round Division II-AA playoff series this weekend.
The Eagles will travel to Montgomery Bell Academy for a double-header on Friday starting at 2 p.m. A third game will be played on Saturday, if needed.
TRACK & FIELD
Brentwood Academy will compete in the region track meet at MBA beginning at 3 p.m. Friday. Fans can take turns going between the baseball game and the track/football stadium.
Brentwood and Ravenwood qualified several athletes in the sectionals at Rossview in Clarksville the past two days. Bruins senior Steve Wade, who just broke a discus record set by Michael Oher of Blind Side fame, has qualified in both throwing events.
GIRLS FASTPITCH SOFTBALL
Ravenwood and Brentwood's fast-pitch girls softball teams are back on the diamond Friday after meeting for the 8th time, needing just one victory each to make the state tournament. The Lady Raptors will host Beech at 5 p.m. Friday in one Class AAA sectional after winning Region 6-AAA, while runner-up Brentwood travels to 5-AAA region champ Mt. Juliet.
BOYS SOCCER
Ravenwood captured the Region 6-AAA boys soccer regional crown on Thursday night, 3-0 against Overton, and now will host 5-AAA runner-up Wilson Central in the sectional on Saturday. The game is tentatively scheduled for 11 a.m. A sixth straight postseason victory would give the Raptors a berth in Tuesday's state quarterfinals at Richard Siegel Soccer Complex in Murfreesboro.
TENNIS
Ravenwood sophomore Sean Karl, now nationally ranked No. 1 in boys 16s, will defend his state high school singles title beginning next Thursday. The RHS girls team also earned a return trip in defense of its Class AAA championship when the team competition begins Tuesday at Old Fort Park. Junior Lauren Caballero will defend her state doubles championship with a new partner, freshman Iris Hao. The BHS boys also were playing a sectional Thursday for a spot in the state team tourney, and Alex Howard and Drake Hernandez qualified for state in doubles.
