Kids go 'pro' at early age these days

By CAROL STUART
Brentwood Home Page sports columnist
For the past several years I’ve been railing about what I call “the professionalization” of children. It seems children must decide at around age 8 or 9 or 10 or so what they want to do the rest of their lives.

Whether it’s music, dance, soccer, martial arts, basketball, gymnastics, chess, academics or whatever, more and more these days we parents, coaches, teachers – our culture – want our kids to pick something at an early age and become a "professional" at it.

There’s this pressure to do everything at an advanced level – play on a travel team in such-and-such sport, study dance, be in a robotics club, get your black belt, take vocal or instrumental lessons for years, run your own volunteer organization, be an Eagle Scout, etc.

When did we stop letting kids be kids?

Regardless of the game’s outcome, both teams would make the sectional round this Saturday with the winner hosting the loser of Hendersonville-Dickson County and the loser traveling to play the winner.

Players on the field Thursday night may not have felt significant pressure to win heading to the next playoff round, but they certainly felt motivated from the anxious fans to beat their crosstown rivals.
