SCHOOL BOARD: BHS, RHS students take most AP tests

New elementary school named Clovercroft

Brentwood and Ravenwood High Schools continue to lead the county in terms of the percentage of students participating in one or more advance placement (AP) courses, the Williamson County School Board learned at its regular meeting Thursday night.

At BHS, 57 percent of sophomores, junior and seniors are enrolled in AP classes; at RHS, 36 percent are enrolled.

In the Superintendent’s Report, Dr. Mike Looney shared that the district’s high schools had shown a four percent increase in the total number of students enrolled in AP courses.

 The district’s newest elementary school – referred to as Breezeway during recent rezoning discussions -- has officially been named Clovercroft Elementary. Located off of Clovercroft Road, the school will open in August 2011. 

In new business, the Board:

  • Approved three 2010-2011 Budget Resolutions including a resolution for $31,585 in federal money for adult education equipment needs; a resolution for $1,780,300 from fund balance to purchase seven replacement and 12 growth school buses; and a resolution for $50,347 to fund three special education teacher assistants for IEP purposes.
  • Approved an intra category transfer of $75,000 to pay for police scanners and radios to be used across the district.
  • Approved a five-year capital outlay plan for the district as adjusted.

In other action, the Board:

  • Approved the addition of math courses to approved WCS lists.
  • Approved construction of a Woodland Middle batting cage.
  • Approved a lease agreement for Brentwood Baptist-Station Hill to use Heritage Middle School.
  • Approved recommended field trip fee requests as adjusted.

The Williamson County School Board ended the semester by honoring several students for their accomplishments. The honorees included the RHS dance team, winners of the TSSAA State Dance Championship in Large Varsity Jazz Dance. Team members include Carly Brenneman, Elizabeth Harwood, Turner Holt, Jordan Melton, Bailey Sharpe, Jessica Stevens, Madison Davis, Kathleen McPherson, MaKenzi Wade, Natalie Aaron, Madie Hall, Madelyn Hopfensperger, Victoria Marrone, Carson Needham, Allison Sorrentino.

Rebecca Nutter is their sponsor and Kristen Hawk is the team coach. 

The next regular board meeting will be Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2010, at 6:30 p.m. in the Auditorium of the Administrative Complex in Franklin.
