WCS: Open-zoned schools for 2011-12 announced

Five Williamson County schools will be open zoned for the 2011-12 school year, though two come with restrictions. The Williamson County Board of Education on Tuesday night open zoned Centennial High for up to 50 students; Fairview High up to 50 students; Fairview Middle up to 50 students; Page High up to 50 students, total, from Ravenwood and Franklin high schools only; and Summit High up to 50 students, ninth and tenth grades only.

The open zone process will begin February 1. More information will be available on the district’s website Thursday.

The board also approved a storage shed for the TV program at Brentwood High School and approved revisions to the Lipscomb Elementary playground at its monthly meeting, held one night later than normal due to Monday’s Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.

During the Student Spotlight portion of the meeting, Brentwood High’s dance team was recognized for winning the state championship in the TSSAA Dance Championship Small Varsity Jazz. Team members include Ashley Aycock, Devon Dixon, Jordyn Smalling, Leigha McGee, Kristen McCarthy, Kristen Clark, Lydia Choi, Katie Gilbert, Kelsey Teegarden, and Brittany Young. Their coach is Kristen Barry.

In other actions, the Board adopted a Strategic Plan for the district. The plan maps out goals for the next seven years in the district. It too will be available on the district’s website soon.

Superintendent Dr. Mike Looney scored a 107 out of 108 on his annual evaluation. Looney was evaluated Looney on developing a Scope and Sequence Guide; developing a Strategic Plan; and developing a Standard Operating Procedures Manual for the district.

In his Superintendent’s Report, Looney recognized Page High Principal Dr. Andrea Anthony. Page High has been nominated for a National Blue Ribbon Award. Looney also thanked the principals and teachers for their hard work demonstrated by the recently released Report Card. The district received all “A”s in achievement.

Board member D’Wayne Greer, who led a committee to research the future use of the Pinewood Elementary School building, reported that the committee recommends that Pinewood be available for lease after the 2010-11 school year.

In the Board Chairman’s Report, Pat Anderson recognized Assistant Superintendent of Elementary Schools Jane Franks who is retiring from the district at the end of the month.

In new business, the Board:

  • Approved three policies on first reading including Enrollment in College Level Courses, Report Cards and Grading Systems and Graduation with Honors.
  • Approved an Intent to Fund of $1,000,000 for wastewater upgrades at Hillsboro and football field improvements at Centennial High. The Board delayed voting on $600,000 for parking lot improvements at Centennial to see if there are other options. 
  • Approved a resolution for $119,794 for a special education judgment and settlement.
  • Selected Goodwyn, Mills & Cawood, Inc. as the architect for the Hillsboro School addition and auditorium project.
  • Approved the YMCA Fun Company before and after school program facilities utilization agreement.

In other action, the Board:

  • Approved the Profession/Personal Leave policy on second reading.
  • Approved additional playground equipment at Oak View Elementary School.
  • Approved the District Safety Plan.
  • Approved recommended field trip fee requests as adjusted.

The next regular meeting of the WCBE will be Monday, February 21, 2011, at 6:30 p.m. in the Auditorium of the Administrative Complex.
