Registration for Scales Elementary School’s Spring Encore will be at 6 p.m. Monday, Jan. 23 in the gym, and the fifth-graders are working on their events for the Winter Olympics on Jan. 26.

John Porter won the National Geography Bee at Scales. There were many rounds of questions that finally determined the winner. 

Here are other happenings at Scales:

  • John Porter won the Geography Bee at Scales Elementary and will advance to the district level. Christopher Crucini was the runner-up.

  • Tracy Rogers’ first-grade class and Tara Douce’s fourth-grade class won the Golden Skate Award.

  • Russell Mills and Corrine Brown represented Scales at the Regional Elks Hoop Shoot.

  • P.E. teachers Brenda Vroon and Chad Messmer are working on Educational Gymnastics with balancing, rolling, transfer of weight and landing.

  • Brooke Davis’ kindergarten students are learning about winter and bears and why they hibernate.

  • In the library with Pat Bowen, students are learning about the Renaissance Program. They will be read a book on their level, answer questions and earn points on three types of quizzes.

  • Debbie Heiman and Meg Chapman’s fifth-grade math classes are working on finding the area and perimeter of regular and irregular polygons. They will be making nets for solid objects and finding the surface area of solids.
