Sabrina Maggart, Ravenwood’s fashion design teacher, hosted Ravenwood Runway 2010. She began by thanking the audience for coming, despite the show having been postponed for a week due to the previous weekend’s weather disaster.
The panel of seven judges included Kevin Crouch, assistant professor of O’More School of Design’s fashion department, and Tressa Bush, television reporter for WZTV FOX 17 News in Nashville. The seven held the weighty responsibility of deciding which students won the highly coveted prizes. Among them were a $1,000 cash prize, provided by Ravenwood’s student production club (FCCLA) and three $14,000 O’More School of Design scholarships awarded to the first-, second- and third-place winners.
During the show, 50 fashion design students modeled their own 165 original designs and 14 private collections. The night’s theme was “Clash of the Class,” as 7th and 8th period fashion design classes battled it out for the top awards.
Finally, the student’s months of hard work — measuring, pinning and sewing — came to life on stage in a display of breathtaking fashions fit for the actual stage of Bravo’s Project Runway.
The show kicked off with a high-energy atmosphere as the young designers took to the stage to strut their stuff. Thumping music kept the show going as the students modeled everything from evening gowns and cocktail dresses to Madonna-esque leather and lace outfits and neon leggings and shorts.
The collections for judging included eight different lines. One, “Sweet Tooth Couture,” consisted of pieces inspired by desserts and candy, like wedding cake, Reece’s Pieces, Berry Skittles, Hot Tamales and Circus Peanuts.
The private collections offered a diverse range of styles. Models wore top hats and threw glitter into the crowd for the appropriately named “Mad Hatter” line by Cali Jeffries. Courtney Bala’s “CB Squared” line was geometrically inspired.
Overall, the collections did not disappoint, and the judges will have their work cut out for them. Winners will be announced Monday.
