Why do sprinters look like sprinters, and marathon runners look like marathon runners? A lot has to do with what muscle fibers that you were blessed with, but also it has do to with the amount of strength training and consistency. When you run, and your goal is weight loss or overall health, you must take an active part in maintaining your muscle during your weight loss. Here are some strength training recommendations to help you out: 1. How long- A minimum of 8-10 exercises involving the major muscle groups (arms, shoulders, chest, back, abs, hips legs). Multiple-set regimens may provide benefits if your time allows. 2. How Hard – Gains are made when sets are taken to almost failure, or you can’t complete one more repetition. 3. How Often - 2-3 days per week. Strength training the same muscle groups 2 days per week gives far greater results than strength training the same muscle groups 1 day per week. Give at least 48 hrs. rest between training muscle groups. 4. Effects – REDUCE MUSCLE LOSS DURING WEIGHT LOSS. Also builds overall strength, stability, improves daily functions, improves specific activities (sports, etc.) improves muscular tone. 5. Effects of NOT – poor posture, limits activities, limits daily functions 6. Special Needs – During weight loss, you will be losing muscle as well as fat, and strength training to maintain muscle is more important than ever. If you have any muscle pain, joint pain, amputations, or any other special needs that prevent range of motion, please see a Physical Therapist or Exercise Specialist to learn modifications to exercises. 7. Equipment – Free Weights, Machines, Rubber bands, Medicine Ball, etc.
