Lady Raptors have 3 championships, 2 runners-up in 5 seasons
Brentwood Home Page news reports The Ravenwood High School girls rugby team has won back-to-back state championships for the first time in its history.
The Lady Raptors defeated Knoxville Karns 22-0 on Sunday, May 8, in Memphis to add the 2011 state title to their case, the third for the program.
The RHS girls team also won in 2007 and were runners-up in 2008 and '09 before winning back the cup in 2010. They were also won the inaugural 2010 7's State Championship, the form of rugby that will be in the 2016 Olympics.
All of this set the stage for their incredible run through the spring of 2011. The run came to a climatic end on when this group of girls gave their moms something to truly cheer on Mother's Day.
A talented group of seniors was led by tournament MVP Ebony Freeman in winning a total of 24 matches since the spring of 2010 and bringing home the first-ever Middle Tennessee girls back-to-back state championships.
This group of girls was supported by a strong group of juniors, sophomores and freshman newcomers. In their five-year history, the Lady Raptors have won 3 state championships and finished as runner-ups twice. Richard Boone is the head coach.
In this year’s state semifinal, the Lady Raptors took on the host Brighton Storm. The Storm represented West Tennessee as the No. 1 overall seed in their respective bracket and they came ready to play. It took the Lady Raptors a while to figure out how best to attack the Storm defense, but once broken the opportunities fell like rain. The final tally was 29-5 and the Lady Raptors advanced to the State Cup Final. Scoring: Diane Pamplona (2 tries), Juli Hindman (2 tries), Alli Dickey (try), Caitlin Boone (2 conversions)
In the state final the Lady Raptors faced the undefeated Karns High School girls in what was predicted to be a smash-mouth match between two strong packs (forwards) and speedy backs. The Lady Raptor forwards pretty much out-rucked, out-mauled, and out-hustled their opponents in this one while the backs tackled like their lives depended on it.
Karns could find few openings or cracks in the Raptor defense and after a long first half that kept the Raptors waiting for more scores from their talented backline, the score stood at 7-0. The heat reached over 90 degrees, but the Lady Raptors weathered the heat, their missed opportunities, the constant barrage of pick-and-go’s by Karns, and their own miscues, to push past the SMAC Champions 22-0. Scoring: Judy Lomax (try), Amanda Vickers (try), Ebony Freeman (try), Caitlin Boone (2 conversions, 1 PK) Ebony Freeman was named Match MVP.
