When TDOT’s paving contractor milled Church Street between Wilson Pike and Franklin Road yesterday, all of the traffic signal detector loops in the road were destroyed, assistant city manager Kirk Bednar reported late Thursday afternoon.

“This was expected and they will be working tonight to replace the loops.  However, until the loops  are replaced, the signals are operating on a fixed schedule with no vehicle detection,” Bednar said.

All of the affected traffic signals on Church Street will stay green for a set amount of time regardless of whether there is any traffic on Church Street. Traffic on the side roads will sit for an extended period of time.

Now entering its third day, TDOT's repaving project on Wilson Pike and on Church Street between Wilson Pike and Franklin will continue Thursday. Motorists are advised to avoid these areas if possible to cut down on traffic back ups.

Updated noon, Tuesday, Sept. 27
The Brentwood Police Department is advising motorists to avoid the Franklin Road and Church Street area today due to traffic congestion. Lane closures due to sidewalk construction have caused significant traffic backups in the area. Use Old Hickory Boulevard as an alternate route.TDOT plans overnight work on Church Street as well, a day earlier than anticipated.

Also, TDOT crews have begun work a day earlier than anticipated on Wilson Pike, according to Assistant City Manager Kirk Bednar. "They are starting to pave the southbound lane of Wilson Pike between Concord Road and Church Street.  They have told Public Works that they will be out of the road by 4 p.m. before the evening rush hour starts, but there will be traffic problems all afternoon in this area," Bednar relayed in an email.

Earlier story...
A few days of discomfort will lead to a smooth outcome but we’re not talking plastic surgery here, unless asphalt applies. That’s exactly what will be applied to Wilson Pike and a portion of Church Street starting this week, however.

Earlier this month, a Tennessee Department of Transportation project to repave Wilson Pike from Arrington north through Brentwood got under way. Work crews are expected to reach Brentwood’s southern boundary on Wednesday, assistant city manager Kirk Bednar announced Monday.

The project includes repaving almost all of the state road north to Church Street. Church Street will also be repaved from Wilson Pike to Franklin Road.  The Church Street work will require the contractor to mill the existing pavement, Bednar said.

The bulk of the paving will be done during the daytime hours, from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. so as not to interfere with peak travel times. During those times, traffic will be "flagged" through the area where work is being done, TDOT spokesperson BJ Doughty said.

Though the two-lane portion of Wilson Pike north of Concord Road will not be widened, rumble strips will be added to sections of the road. “These are the grooved sections of pavement designed to alert drivers when they are leaving their lane of traffic,” Doughty said, who noted that lane departures account for more than 60 percent of traffic crashes.

On Church Street, work to replace the handicapped ramps at the road’s intersections began over the weekend to bring them up to current ADA compliance. Doughty said this standard for any TDOT resurfacing project.

The good news for the thousands of commuters who use Church Street to get to their Maryland Farms’ workplaces is that the short paving stretch will be done at night, between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. It should have “minimal impacts” on traffic, Doughty said.

HMA Contractors is the contractor on this $868,450 project. It is expected to be complete by mid-October.
