Brentwood Home Page news reports Ravenwood’s wrestling team moved up three spots to No. 9 in the Tennessee High School Coaches’ Poll this week after winning the Slamfest in Clarksville.
The Raptors, wrestling without three starters, got a pin from Jacob Freeman at 125 and a technical fall victory by Bradley Butters at 130 in its final two matches to win in dramatic fashion against Clarksville, 35-29. It is the second straight Slamfest title for RHS.
Since it was also a snow day Monday, Coach Josh Peck gave the team the day off to celebrate the victory, which he called “a complete team championship.”
Ravenwood had wins over Northeast 61-11, Cookeville 67-6, Dickson County 55-17 and Beech 46-34 to make the finals of the Slamfest duals tournament Saturday.
The Raptors went ahead 6-0 quickly against Clarksville with 135-pounder Tanner Reynolds’ pin of Patrick Grady in 5:05. But the Wildcats, also missing three starters, took a 19-6 lead after six matches and led 29-24 going into the last two bouts.
At 189, Cody Stewart pinned Wes Beagle in 1:25 to pull RHS within 19-12. The Raptors then won three straight matches to close it to 25-24 on Kyle Kuennhold’s 4-1 win at 112.
After Ravenwood lost at 119, Freeman and Butters scored their big victories to seal the championship.
In the coaches’ poll, Bradley Central and Soddy-Daisy remain 1-2 and Cleveland advanced from No. 4 to No. 3 after Baylor fell to fifth. McCallie bumped up one spot to sixth, making No. 4 Christian Brothers of Memphis the only non-Chattanooga area school in the top six.
Nashville's Division II school Father Ryan and District 11-AAA Williamson County teams Franklin, Ravenwood and Independence round out the top 10, respectively, followed by Science Hill of Johnson City and Ooltewah.
