Community-wide celebration Tuesday at Galleria
Brentwood Home Page news reports

United Way of Williamson County wraps up its 50th year celebration by returning to the ‘50s. An old-fashioned Sock Hop will mark the occasion at CoolSprings Galleria’s center court on Tuesday, Sept. 20, from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Local agencies supported by United Way will be in center court, providing information about services and ways to get involved while local dance teams will provide plenty of themed entertainment. A DJ will be spinning tunes for those who want to show off their jitterbugs, shags, swing, and ponies.

Participating dance teams include Courtney Cunningham/Michael Graves, BGA Dance, Heritage Middle School, Woodland Middle School, Franklin High School and the Tap ‘N Dolls. There will be giveaways and door prizes.

Today, United Way of Williamson County supports 48 programs through 32 partner agencies as well as initiatives to promote healthy lifestyles, financial stability and lifetime learning to reach independence. Special programs provide free tax preparation for lower income families. Area teens are engaged through community service projects. United Way touches the senior citizen living next door; the single mother working at your favorite restaurant; and the child with developmental delays whose parents need a helping hand. Contributions also assist those who face chronic illness or natural disasters.

I highly recommend giving charity dollars directly to individual charities, versus to the United Way. My experience with the UW has taught me that their donation choices can be highly questionable, and their administrative costs to be high and an unnecessary erosion of the dollars you are trying to provide to charities. They spend tons of money on their image and marketing, when they are merely middle men with little or no value.

Give to your charity of choice. Skip the middle man that will otherwise take some of it.
