Ravenwood’s Lady Raptors fell to Hunters Lane Wednesday night after DeAndrea Sawyer hit a jumper as time expired in the Region 6-AAA finals. When it was over, the Lady Warriors claimed the title by only two points. The final score was 34-32.

Hunters Lane (24-5) never had the lead until the final shot in a game comprised of mostly defense.

Ravenwood (24-9) controlled the entire game. RHS held Hunters Lane to single-digit scoring in every quarter but the fourth, including a three-point first quarter.

The Lady Warriors played fast and physical throughout the game, and Ravenwood head coach Ron Brock knew that was going to be the case.

“We wanted to make it as much of a half-court game as possible,” Brock said. “We succeeded in the first half. But the adjustments on defense that they made caught us off guard.”

Holding Hunters Lane to 19 points through three quarters, the Lady Raptors gave up 15 points in the final frame.

Brock said it was mostly turnovers from their defensive change that caused Ravenwood to drop an eight-point lead in the final six minutes.

“Their defense led to some offense for them,” Brock said. “That’s the difference.”

Lady Raptors senior forward Erin Lauderdale led both teams in scoring with 14 points.

During a Ravenwood timeout with 3:43 left in the third quarter, juniors Jayne Rice and Logan Hodskins got into an altercation on the bench and had to be separated by Brock. Concluding the game, Brock refused to discuss the matter.

“We’re not going to talk about negative stuff. We’re going to talk about positive stuff. That’s not even going to be an issue,” he said.

The Lady Raptors – a team that has already broken the school record for wins in a season -- get at least one more chance to add to their win total.

Since the top two teams from each region move on to the sub-state round, neither team’s season is over just yet. Ravenwood will travel to Clarksville High School on Saturday night, and Hunters Lane will play Wilson Central.

Brentwood High, the District 11-AAA champion, plays on its own floor at 7 p.m. tonight in the boys regional championship, against 12-AAA winner Overton. Both teams will also play in Monday's boys sub-state round at home sites.
