Brentwood Home Page's weekday feature "Notes from Brentwood's Blackboards," a peek into what's happening in our local public schools.
Crockett:First graders have learned to estimate in their math lesson. The students examined the giant snowman in the orange hall and tried to calculate an accurate estimate of how many snowballs were used in its creation. Many students were spellbound to see if their estimate came close to the actual number of 244 snowballs. Prekindergarten in the orange hall is showcasing its wonderful snowman art created by the students.
Edmondson: Edmondson’s six Destination Imagination teams are hard at work writing and practicing their original scripts, building structures, and doing research. The Regional Tournament is Saturday, March 13 at Centennial High School. Good luck teams and thank you for representing Edmondson.
Kenrose: Congratulations to the students who participated in the first annual Kenrose school wide spelling bee held on January 6th, 2010! The Kenrose spelling bee is the first step of a spelling bee journey that culminates in the Scripps National Spelling Bee.
Lipscomb: After reading the story "A Cool Place to Visit", a story about the ice hotel in Sweden, third graders in Julia Simmon’s and Bridget Currie’s class completed an exciting project. They made their our own ice hotels out of sugar cubes. Sherry Hitt’s fifth grade class has enjoyed the Motion and Design Science kits. They will be building new vehicles to race soon!
Scales: Skate Day is today at the Brentwood Skate Center 4:30-6:30.Help win the Golden Skate for your classroom.The fifth grade Talent Show tryouts will be 3:45-4:45 p.m. and a parent meeting at 4:45 p.m. Congratulations to Melody Scott's fifth grade class for winning the Winter Olympics representing New Zealand; second place went to Ireland of Debbie Heiman's class and third place went to Honduras of Brent Oakley's class. Congratulations to Rachel Donelson and Nicole West for receiving a Gotcha Award for helping with Run Club.
Sunset: Students in Mrs. Sandy Conrad’s kindergarten are investigating penguins, including their unique characteristics, appearance, and diet. Together, they are learning about the different types of penguins, where penguins live, and what they need to survive in their environment. They are reading lots of books to better understand their habits and habitats. At the end of the study, the class will create a model of a penguin and each student will construct a habitat for their penguin using a variety of materials.
Brentwood Middle: Students in Mrs. Lane Thompson’s language arts classes are currently working on the media portion of their curriculum. Students are learning about various media techniques and writing their own screen plays.
Sunset Middle: Please congratulate the following students for making the Middle TN Middle School Honor Choir! A record number of students auditioned so we are all very proud of the hard work these students put into making this happen:Lauren Castor, Alyssa Miller, Emily Adams, Jacob McKissock.
Woodland Middle: Mrs. Prosise’s classes would like to welcome student teacher Jenna Polakiewicz from Vanderbilt University. She will be with the classes through the first week of March and has planned a wonderful, engaging unit of study building on students’ expository writing skills. Classes have also been studying clauses, working both independently and collaboratively, to build paragraphs and essays rich in syntactic variety. TCAP Writing Assessment is scheduled for Tuesday, February 2nd, so please reinforce the importance of a having a good night’s sleep and eating breakfast before testing.
