Ravenwood forensics takes first, plus other school news

RHS wins forensics tourney, BMS has a weekly newscast, and WMS has county’s first chapter of Sociedad Hispánica de Amistad. Find out what’s happening at Brentwood-area schools including Crockett and Scales.

Ravenwood High: The Ravenwood Forensics Team traveled to the White House High School Forensics Tournament recently and walked away with the 1st place Sweepstakes trophy. In addition to winning the sweepstakes, RHS filled 38 of the 78 slots in the finals.

Brentwood Middle:  Students in the 8th grade advanced broadcast class have been working on a weekly newscast that will be shown school-wide on Friday afternoons. VNN (Viking News Network) contains segments about upcoming events; school safety; and classroom activities. There will also be segments that spotlight student talents and teacher talents.  This year’s VNN staff includes:  Ben Sherrill, Erin Oquindo, Kira Lee, Taylor Fussell, Joey Glasgow, Patrick Hayes, Andy Hughes, Pete Pierson, Jenna Jason, Lily Peters, Kameron Ziesig, and Jessica Armstrong.

Woodland Middle: WMS now has a chapter of Sociedad Hispánica de Amistad, a society, sponsored by the National American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese for students currently enrolled in Spanish I Honors.  WMS is the first middle school chapter in the county and the third in the state. The purpose of the chapter is to further each member’s proficiency and achievement in Spanish through an activities-based society, dedicated to ambassadorship, service to school, and service to the Hispanic community. Students will choose the projects in which they wish to participate. As students complete their service, they will be eligible for honor’s membership and other types of recognition. The newly elected officers for the eighth grade Spanish Honor Society are:  Clarita Lopez-Fontela, President, Molly Choi, Vice-President and Nick Dauchot, Secretary. Spanish teacher Mrs. Tracy Poole is the club sponsor.

Crockett Elementary: Robert Bohrer, principal at Crockett, is encouraging 300 Crockett students to join the spring ING Kids Rock Marathon so he can sleep on the school roof. His fellow supporters at the Crockett fun run were Jalen Johnson, Cade Flores, Ben Milstone, and Owen Griosmore.

Scales Elementary:  The annual food drive for Graceworks is underway. The school wants to fill up all the empty boxes in the front hallway to help residents of Williamson County.  . . .  Gail Merritt, music teacher, is very proud of the 19 students that participating in the String Ensemble.  They recently performed a serenade for the principal, Rick West, who spent the night on the roof for a thank you for Invest Week.  They will also be performing for the Holiday Concert in December.
