In the news business, the week after Christmas is always the most dreaded. With the exception of 1999 and the impending end of the world, absolutely nothing happens that week. Trust me on this. That’s just the way it is. Trust me on this.
In Brentwood, however, I’ve decided there’s a worst week for news, unless perhaps you move your operation to Brentwood South, a k a Destin and the rest of the Redneck Riviera.
It’s the week more commonly known as Williamson County Schools’ Spring Break.
Heck, even Capt. Tommy Walsh of the Brentwood Police Department took the week off, hence no BHP Crime Report. I emailed Asst. Chief Jeff Hughes on Thursday, desperate for a purse snatching, a stolen check, anything.
“All’s quiet,” he said.
I badgered Asst. City Manager Kirk Bednar for news. How about some lawsuits over potholes or outrage over the Crockett Road repaving?
Nothing. Nada.
He did share that, “Split Log Road work is moving again – still anticipate substantial completion by June.” Whoopee!
Bill Akin sponsored a Candidate Forum at the Brentwood Library on Tuesday, and lots of people came --even a few who weren’t related to the six candidates. But darn it, all of the candidates are so qualified and well spoken we couldn’t even come up with a glaring headline to draw readers in.
The weather was beautiful most of the week, then turned cold and nasty but the tornado sirens didn't go off and there was no Turner barn to be swept away.
There were no city meetings, but given that an election is coming up, even if there had been it wouldn't have helped. No one wants to stir up anything until AFTER May 3. Just check out our advance for Monday night's meeting to see what I mean.
Thank goodness for Big City Subs' "soft opening" and the new tenants (First Watch restaurant, etc.) coming into Pear Tree Village shopping center. When a slow news week threatens to sink your readership numbers, all it takes is the mere mention of food to perk everyone back up.
We did have a huge story on our local high school rugby clubs, which received international notice, however.
On Sunday, I got an email from Lorna Cannon, press officer of the Brentwood Rugby Club, asking if it was OK to send us rugby reports and photos.
“Sure!” I emailed back, so happy to have new sports news since our high school teams had last week off too. I forwarded the material to Carol Stuart, our “go-to person” for everything sports, to edit and input.
Moments later, Carol called.
“Ummm, Susan. I think this is from Brentwood, England.”
Bummer.
But at the very least I can give the U14s Essex Cup winners a shout out:
Well done to all the boys on an outstanding 16-12 victory over Upminster in the U14 Essex County Cup Final. A grand performance in a very tense as well as exciting game. Upminster as per usual were extremely strong in all areas of the game but the squad showed tremendous character and strength to secure a memorable win. Well Done Boys!!
If you have a scoop about Brentwood, Tenn., send it in, though now that Spring Break 2011 has come and gone, I know the news will pick back up.
Because if there’s one thing I know about Brentwood, it’s not boring. Except for two weeks out of the year, that is. |
