Brentwood High School's Bruins win the District Championship on the road in a huge rival game against Franklin 21-20. With typical fall football twists and turns, the torrential rain provided a muddy, slippery backdrop for this big county game.
The Rebels started off with a long punt return, ending with a facemask penalty that put the ball half the distance to the goal. The Rebels were on the 8-yard line and set for an early touchdown. It took all four downs but the Rebels carried the ball across the line.
The Bruins answered with an 80 yard drive. Coffey took the ball down to the 7-yard line and with another play had us first and down inside the five. Coffey found the hole on the right side, got the lean and crossed the goal line for the Bruins first touchdown. Brian Davis had the extra point with 0:54 left in the first quarter.
Franklin took the lead again at 14-7. The Bruins answered with a 65-yard drive taking up over five minutes of the clock. Coffey carried the ball nine yards for the first down. Then, he rushed the Bruins to first and goal on the two. Coffey followed with a drive up the middle leaving the scored tied at halftime 14-14.
In the second half, the Bruins and Rebels were battling through the mud and muck. After the Bruins held the Rebels in the third quarter, they went back to receive the punt. The punt was fumbled and recovered by Franklin. The Rebels quickly threw a slant across the middle scoring a touchdown. The game changer was the missed extra point by Franklin's kicker.
With less than three minutes to go in the fourth quarter, the Bruin's were changing up the offense. After utilizing the running game most of the night, Quarterback Clay Webber passed his way down the field. Michael Dugan completed a pass from Webber on a slant pass wide open to the end zone. The Bruins kicker Davis gave the Bruins the lead with a completed point after touchdown.
"They had crowded the box a lot more. We opened it up a little bit and made them play a little more loose," said Dugan. "It was a great coaching call and it worked really well."
The Bruins now had to fight off the Rebels for 2:46 to hold their lead of 21-20. The Rebels completed pass after pass quickly moving down the field well within field goal range. The Bruins forced the fumble inside the 10-yard line and recovered the ball. With less than a minute to go in the game, the Bruins ran the ball to burn the clock while the Rebels used all their timeouts. One more play, Webber took a knee and the Bruins were District Champions.
"It's good to have the District of Region 5. It's really important to us. We are just really proud of our boys," said Head Coach Ron Crawford. "Clay Weber has just really matured throughout the year. He gets really geared up."
