Dr. Paul W. Cleckner: Educator, family man
Dr. Paul W. Cleckner, age 76 of Brentwood, passed away on Thursday, surrounded by those he loved: his beautiful wife Beverly, their children, and grandchildren. God brought Paul W. Cleckner into this world on May 8, 1934 and took him home on May 13, 2010.
An alumnus of Trevecca Nazarene University, he earned a Masters of Divinity degree from the Nazarene Theological Seminary along with a Masters and PhD from the University of Kansas. Dr. Cleckner spent his entire educational career encouraging and helping students achieve their maximum potential.
In the fall of 2009, a group of former students and peers hosted a luncheon in his honor at Trevecca in recognition of the many contributions he had made to their lives.
Dr. Cleckner was preceded in death by parents, George W. and Eva P. Cleckner; three brothers and five sisters. He is survived by wife, Dr. Beverly Cleckner; daughters, Susan Lane (Mike), Dianne Dougharty (Mark), Janet Cleckner Mattingly; son, Paul E. Cleckner (Jenny); grandchildren, Lindsay Jennings (Seth), Jacquelyn Harris (Justin), Angela Porada (Mark), Kelly Anderson (Robert), Jessica, Paul W., and Chase Cleckner, Jeremy and Mackenzie Mattingly; seven great grandchildren; one brother and two sisters.
While Dr. Cleckner earned many accolades, his greatest accomplishment was the legacy he left with his family. His grandchildren called him Papa and he was always there when they needed him, whether it was attending a football game, lacrosse match or fixing a flat tire. The lessons he taught them will never be forgotten. He was a man who truly lived out his favorite quote, "your need my vision."
A memorial service will be conducted on Wednesday, May 19, at 2 p.m. in the McClurken Chapel on the campus of Trevecca Nazarene University, Dr. Dan Boone officiating. In lieu of flowers please make donations on Dr. Cleckner's behalf to pancreatica.org, 149 Bonifacio Place, Monterey, CA 93940 or Trevecca Nazarene University, Office of External Affairs, 333 Murfreesboro Rd., Nashville, TN 37210.
