Moms 'desperate" for school to start | Jodi Rall, In the Bubble, Brentwood Home Page, back to school, Desperate Housewives, children at home, summer, camps, moms

The Desperate Housewives of Brentwood -- they’re everywhere!

You know who they are and you might just be one of them. Everywhere you go you see them; the grocery story, Costco, Target, TJ Maxx and at Chick-Fil-A just to name a few places, off the top of my head.

How do I know these women are desperate? Because at some point, I have been one of “them.”

Before I introduce you let me take you back to a few short months ago when the end of May rolled around. Cheers of joy as school ended and we could all take a much needed break from school schedules, homework and activities.

Some had the good fortune to sleep in and not juggle work/children all summer, saying goodbye to the trusty alarm clock. Amy Williams, who has middle school boys at Brentwood Middle School, “loves the easy going mornings, no needing to be anywhere!”

Alice Cooper is in my head singing “School's Out for Summer!” Does that show my age?

Now that the dog days of summer are here, the camps are winding down, vacations are ending and boredom is setting in for the children, the tune has quickly shifted. And for many working parents, the checkbook is a little lighter from paying for sitters.

A small cry has now grown into “When do they go back to school?”  Do you have a song for that Alice?

For those of you with preschool-aged children the wait is a little longer. However , the good news is that for most Williamson County children, school will be starting within a week or two.

My friend Katie Hamm has three boys all at different schools: oldest at Father Ryan (she is constantly driving), middle son is at Woodland Middle and youngest at Kenrose Elementary.  As we tried to get together around children’s schedules, she exclaimed,  “It’s ALL about the children. I’m exhausted!”

Even friends who in my eyes appear calm and stay positive like Amy Freese shared “Having teens/tweens finds me in a schizophrenic state . . . wishing they were little again hanging by the pool and then wishing they were in school so I don't have to wonder what mischief they might be in. Motherhood/summertime can make moms a lil nut-so.”

On my weekly visits to the grocery store, I can’t help but notice moms looking a little weary.

Reader Angie Roach Larner shared: “It’s much easier to go to the grocery store without them.

Boy do I remember those days with  four children in one cart, plus food -- it was like an episode of Survivor.

For my own humbling story of the week: True story, when mine were little who did we run into literally at the Harris-Teeter? Wynona Judd and her two children (of course her children were well behaved).

One infant carrier, one strategically placed inside the cart and two hanging on the sides. I said to the girls “Please don’t squish the bread!”  Wynonna laughed and said out loud “Honey, you got more problems than squished bread.”

To make matters worse my then 2½-year old who thought he was “Prince Eric” from The Little Mermaid yells at Wynonna “Hey, Mommy look it’s Ariel!” Oh, dear God get me out of this store, please!

You see dear readers why I relate to the desperation of mothers everywhere? Thank God my sense of humor helped me survive many a long summers.

When I posed my question of the week on Facebook “How desperate are we for the kids to go back to school?" Nancy Waynick replied with “That is a loaded question.” Have a feeling that Mama Nancy is treasuring every moment as her youngest child begins her senior year in high school.

Time flies, so treasure the moments even when times get a little desperate.
