Belk's 'Bright Now' spring predictions ring true

Special to Brentwood Home Page
Spring has sprung!  Well, on the fashion runways at least.  As we get closer to warmer weather, we can begin to look forward to the beautiful clothing that awaits us.  From bright colors to glamorous prints, this spring is one that I am really looking forward to.

I was recently invited to a trend presentation given by the VP of Trend Merchandising at Belk.  In recent years, Belk has branded itself as the expert when it comes to modern, Southern, style; and this spring, it will be just that.

Belk has come out with a fashion tagline for spring, ‘BRIGHT NOW.’  They continue to say, “Bold colors, statement patterns and new cuts are on-trend for women’s fashion.”  I can’t wait!

Fall’s trend of color blocking continues into spring.  Bold colors and even color clashing can be seen in shoes, clothing and accessories.  Buying a ‘trend’ can be an extraordinarily tricky purchase – one of the most important concepts I keep in mind while I work with my clients is to buy pieces that are essential and classic.

American Originals: Jones New York Collection's notch collar jacket, $199; silk blouse, $69; and belted wide leg trouser, $129

Even when I purchase trends with clients, I buy ones that I know can be used for many seasons.  I think it is important to know what the trends are, but to invest in clothing that you love so you don’t mind wearing it even when it may not be a ‘trend,’ but it still you.

Belk has done a great job breaking their trends into specific categories…Let me help you navigate these trends by suggesting a few of my favorite looks and pieces that can be worn for multiple seasons.

American Originals

This trend category was coined as ‘a timeless nod to the classics,’ which I love as these pieces can be used for many years.  Polka dots always cycle back into style and are a smart purchase.  I love the idea of this white sleeveless blouse because it can be worn with a classic ankle pant, jeans or cute shorts for a casual look and layered for a bit of fun.   The red lace jacket has a classic cut that never goes out of style.  Even though the lace is a bit of a trend it can be worn for seasons to come paired with a more classic cut white trouser, jeans and even over dresses.
Shape Shift: Maggy London halter top wide leg jumpsuit, $168.

Shape Shift
Belk describes this trend as, ‘Asymmetry, strong angular sleeve treatments, obtuse layering and stand collars…Highly sophisticated optics, over-the-top stripes and color blocking refuse to go unnoticed, especially in black and white.’

I love this trend because you will definitely make a statement.  Each piece has such a distinct look that it becomes something unique for multiple seasons and can even have a vintage feel.

So Pretty: Spense sleeveless ruffle blouse, $58.

If these looks are ‘you,’ then wearing these for seasons to come are a wonderful idea and a worthy investment.  These are a few pieces that are definitely trends but can be turned into classics!

So Pretty

I personally LOVE this trend category.  Feminine, flirty and even elegant.  Belk has described this category as ‘romantic, soft hues to lingerie affects and garden florals with handcrafted touches, tonal embroideries, corsage embellishments—ruffles and pleats add the perfect touch to this romantic spirit.’  I couldn’t have said it better myself.  These pieces are so delicate that their elegance gives them that classic feel that does not go out of style.

70’s Glam
This was an ode to Yves Saint Laurent and his genius.  This trend will cycle back in until the world stops turning and contains worthy investments that you can and should invest in (Think pieces you can pass down to your daughters).  The dress is something that is in style for every summer party for years to come.  Colored denim is all the rage but this color is one that makes a statement but can also be worn next season; even if ‘colored’ denim isn’t all the rage.  The floral blouse can be paired with a multitude of bottoms including shorts, ankle pants and jeans for a more casual look.  Feminine and chic all wrapped up into one.

70's Wow: Muse high/low hem print dress, $178
