State Champions for 2010

State Champion Ravenwood Girls Tennis Team

The Ravenwood girls brought home the state title for the first time in the school’s history, and their reign probably won’t end for some time having such depth as a young team.

The team consisted of 11, but only five were allowed to play at state.  Caroline Morelli and Kayla Anthony played #2 doubles, Vivan Hao played #3 singles, and Madison Stankevich with Lauren Caballero played #1 doubles and #2 and #1 singles respectively.  The duo won the individual state title playing doubles as well.  Senior captains Ashley King and Camden Hastings will be missed as they head off to college, but the remaining nine girls have committed to practicing and playing tournaments year round.

The team wrapped up the regular season with a 9 – 0 record.  Rising senior Caroline Morelli states, “Brentwood is usually our fiercest competition. Our very own district is the toughest in the state.”  All the girls say this experience is one they will never forget.

State Champion Brentwood High School Boys Tennis Team

The future looks promising for the BHS boys tennis team, with a new set of experienced coaches, a new home at the Wildwood Swim and Tennis Club, and the loss of only one player, senior Loukas Peterson.

BHS also looks forward to having one of the nation’s top players join the team next year, Max Lipman who is a freshman.  The group trains together year round and competes in most of the South’s top tournaments.

In regular season play, the Bruins were undefeated with a record of 11 – 0.  Every player had an important role in the state title victory.  Because everyone took care of business by winning every match, the team went in to the state playoffs as the #1 seed.

In their semifinal match the Bruins faced three-time defending state champions Science Hill of Johnson City.  They swept the match and took the finals, not losing a game.

The entire team included:   Alex Howard, Drake Hernandez, Loukas Peterson, Ryan Satterfield, Evan Borowski, Matthew Crockett,  Brock Reese, Tyler Von Tagen, Andy Mullenger, and Michael Arguello.

State Champion
BHS Boys Track and Field Team

The
Brentwood High School track team is definitely on a roll, and has been for the past four years.  They have won the State Championship three of the last four years, coming in second last season.  Coach Gary Kinder states, “This was by far the sweetest victory due to the adversities the team faced, and the fact that everyone that competed at the meet scored.  It was a spectacular team effort, and a great way to send off our seniors.”  Kevin Lazas, the nation’s top decathlete, suffered a foot injury, and Stephen Wade had an untimely misfortune in the discus, but the team prevailed.

Although the close knit group had a strong senior presence with Kevin Lazas and Ford Bell, who also won an individual state championship in the 800 meter run, Brentwood has an uberstrong core of underclassmen to carry on the tradition next year and into the future.

Members of the boys track team who competed at the state meet include: Kevin Lazas, Clay Kosack, Eric Hoff, Stephen Wade, Lucas Patrick, Taylor Valien, Patrick Kellett, Nathan Thomas, Paul Stewart, Ford Bell, Jake Lazas, Ish Bangura.

Check back next week when Brentwood Home Page features more state championship teams and individuals.
