Maggie Baxter

Maggie Baxter, a Senior swimmer and co-captain of the Ravenwood Swim Team, was born to love swimming.  Her mom Chris swam for 3 National Titles with the University of Texas, competed in the Olympic Trials, and is now the Assistant Swim Coach for the Ravenwood team.  Maggie is quick to point out though that her mom "never put pressure on her to swim, or to compete."  Maggie says, "My mom is the smartest swimmer I know."

Maggie swims for Excel year round and qualified for the Southeastern and Sectional Championships.  Her best career time is 25.10 in the 50 free.  In last weekend's State Championships Maggie swam the 50 Free, 100 Fly and 200 Free Relay.  Last year Maggie was awarded the Raptor Award for team spirit.

Maggie will be attending Auburn in the fall where she will pursue a Nursing Degree.  She has a lineage in the medical field and wants to keep the family tradition going.  She has decided not to swim so she will have more time for school work.

Last year Maggie's horse, April, fell backward on her while she was riding.  The injury caused Maggie to have 2 eye surgeries, and April to just hang out in their stable at home.  Prior to that Maggie and April had a successful career at Dressage Horse Shows, placing 8th in the Region her last showing.  Maggie states, "My accident was actually a blessing.  God opened my eyes to new experiences I would have never done if I had still been swimming and showing April.  I got the opportunity to visit and get to know my great-grandmother in her nursing home every week.  I have learned so much from her."

Whitney Reid

Whitney Reid, a Senior and captain of the Brentwood High Dance Team performed her last dance last Friday night, Senior Night during the Battle of the Woods.  "It will be sad, I have been dancing for 10 years."  During Whitney's Sophomore and Junior years, she would spend up to 6 hours a day practicing before and after school, then practice at Ann Carroll School of Dance after school practice.  All her hard work paid off as the BHS Dance Team was State Champion in 2008 and Runner-Up in 2009.  They were semi-finalist in 2009 at the National Dance Team Competition, and placed 6th in 2008.

Whitney is the President of the Brentwood United Methodist Church Sonshine Choir, and very active with the BUMC Youth Group.  She volunteers every summer for three weeks at Camp Barnabas, a Christian camp for kids with life-threatening illnesses and disabilities.  This experience swayed Whitney into majoring in Rehabilitation and Disability Sciences at Auburn, where she has been accepted for the fall.  She loves hanging out with her family, Becky and Donald and older sister Lindsey.

Kristen Barry, the BHS Dance Team Coach is someone Whitney will miss greatly when the Dance Team finished for the season.

"Kristen has been my close friend for 3 years,” said Reid. “She has made me the dancer I am today due to her passion and dedication to the team.  I will take what I learned from her and use it forever."

Ted Curtiss

The Ravenwood Boys Swim Team has one of the top freshman relay teams in the nation.  Ted Curtiss is a member of the Fantastic Four, and feels he is improving every time he races.
"I hated swimming when I was little," said Curtiss. "It wasn't until I was around 11 that I even got in the water to compete."
That's rough when you are from a swimming family.  His sister Rachel, a senior is the captain of the Ravenwood swim team, and his mom Angela is the Coach of the team.  Ted loves it now and swims for NAC year round.

Last year at the Southeastern meet, he placed second in the 100 back long course.  His medley relay team set a Southeastern record by 6 seconds and placed 5th in the Nation.  In the Music City Invitational meet he was first in the 100 and 200 back, and first in the 200 Individual Medley.

Other than training 5 hours a day, Ted plays the trumpet in the concert band and last year made the Mid State Band - top 30 trumpets in the state.  He also has a perfect 4.5 GPA.   Ted also played baseball, but had to give it up due to lack of time.

Ted credits his NAC coach Brad Kale for his constant improvement,  "He helped me succeed by making me to compete at higher levels and practicing at higher levels also.  I'm so glad he pushed me stay with swimming."

Jordan Evans

The big question after football season was which college Jordan Evans would play for.  At National Signing Day he signed to play for Brown University.  The star halfback of the Brentwood High Football team will play wide receiver for Brown.  His stats from this year are as follows: 14 touchdowns, 3 punt return TD's, 3 interceptions, 25 receptions, 348 yards rushing, 441 yards receiving.  His best game of the year was against Ravenwood where he scored 4 touchdowns.  Versatile Evans also played quarter back his Sophomore year.  With all his success in football, this was the first year Jordan's mom has watched him play because she was so nervous he would get hurt.  Lowanda, a second grade teacher at Lipscomb, was waiting at home with a hug and ready to hear all about it though.

Jordan is a member of the National Honor Society, FCA, Habitat for Humanity, is a volunteer tutor at Lipscomb Elementary, all while maintaining a 4.0 GPA.  He plans to receive a degree in Organizational Studies from Brown, and while Ivy League schools do not give out athletic scholarships,  Jordan hopes to receive  a few for his outstanding academics and community involvements.

Jordan has some big shoes to fill as his older sisters Whitney age 22, attends Washington University, and Ashley age 26 attends the University of Michigan. When asked who had the greatest influence on his football success Jordan states, "Coach Harrison from Brentwood Middle got me playing in the 7th grade.  He introduced me to football and made it fun."  Of all of Jordan's other successes he credits his mom and dad.
