Peyton McClure
Senior / Golf

Brentwood senior Peyton McClure is a member of the Bruins golf team. Having played golf since the sixth grade, Peyton enjoys the sport and had a great season in his final year in high school.

When off the course Peyton is a member of Youth Leadership Brentwood as a graduate returning to be a representative, is highly involved in Young Life and competed in the Mr. BHS competition.

Coach John Higgins has “had an amazing effect on me and our team. He challenged us to be the best we can be, and I attribute a lot of my success to him.” He had the team's second-lowest score to help BHS win the region and qualify for the state tournament, where the Bruins finished as runner-up.

With a GPA of 4.5 and ACT score of 35, Peyton is an academic leader at BHS. His top choice for college is Vanderbilt and Peyton would like to focus on his academics, so he doesn't plan on playing golf in college.

A fun fact about Petyon is that as part of the Mr. BHS competition he “performed a dance that included levitating a beach ball.” Peyton’s classmates nominated him for the competition -- "a beauty pageant," where he competed in swimsuit, evening wear and talent.

His parents are Eve and Gary McClure.

In addition to running, Katherine is president of Fellowship of Christian Athletes, yearbook editor, National Honor Society member, NEHS member and an active participant in her youth group at Brentwood United Methodist Church.

The coach or person who inspires Katherine the most is her father Mike. “My dad is a runner and he has impacted me the most," she said. "I’m so proud of him as he has run two Ironmans and qualified for Boston.”

With aspirations of becoming an orthopedic surgeon, Katherine’s first choice for colleges is Clemson.

A fun fact about Katherine is that she always wears mid-calves with spikes. With her teammates a tradition is they “Run out from the starting line, put one foot in circle, then we pray, kiss our hand to our foot for luck and then go race.”

Jonathan Layne
Senior / Football, rugby

RHS senior Jonathan Layne plays middle linebacker and defensive end on the Raptors varsity football team. He was nominated for his outstanding game against Smyrna.

“My game probably was one of my better games in my career," he said. "I had a sack for a 5-6 yard loss, along with a few solo tackles and many assists.” In that same game Jonathan had a huge hit on a Smyrna running back late in the third quarter. “It was a moment I’ll always remember,” he said.

In addition Jonathan is a member of National Honor Society, plus plays RHS rugby and competes in Mormon League Basketball. He is an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, attends seminary every weekday from 6-6:45 a.m. and is the president of his seminary class.

The coach who has made a difference in Jonathan’s playing is defensive coordinator Coach Keel. "He inspires me to not only work hard and do my duty on defense, but to continue striving to be the best man I can be outside of sports and education," Jonathan said. "He taught me to trust in my family, beliefs and my brothers on the ‘D.’ ”

While Jonathan has not chosen a college yet, he has plans to play rugby and to pursue a degree in chemical or biomedical engineering.

With great pride, he hopes to become a pilot for the United States Air Force as his brother, father and grandfather have done before him.

She said there have been coaches along the way who have helped her game. “My favorite coach ever was coach 'K' who is a coach at TSU," Micaela said. "She was my coach when I was 15 and made me the defensive player I am today. Coach believed in me and although the hardest coach I’ve ever had, it was her belief in me that made me succeed. I always knew she was on my side.”

With college plans set, Micaela will be playing volleyball for Union in Jackson, Tenn. She aspires to be a pediatric physical therapist someday.

Her parents are Jackie Young and Kevin Bailey.
