Several local high school students will travel to Dallas, Texas, this week to represent various high schools at the National Forensic League National Speech and Debate tournament. To attend, students must place among the top competitors at a district tournament in one of eleven main events.

The following students qualified to participate in the national tournament: Patrick Kellett and Michael Zoorob from Brentwood High will compete in public forum debate; Eli Grimes and Chris Mueller from Brentwood High will compete in duo interpretation; Taylor Norton from Brentwood Academy and Maddison Mucci from Ravenwood High will compete in original oratory; and Lydia Philips from Ravenwood High and Ross Birdsong from Ravenwood High will compete in humorous interpretation.

The first National Forensic League national tournament was held in 1931 with 49 schools represented. This year approximately 5000 attendees are expected to convene in Dallas. Well-known alumni of the National Forensic League include Ted Turnder, Oprah Winfrey, Academy Award winner Renee Zellweger, and Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor.

The final rounds of competition will be held on Friday, June 17, and Saturday, June 18, with an awards assembly taking place Saturday night.
