Let’s help give soldiers a night to remember | BrentWord, Brentwood Home Page,Susan Leathers, brentwood tn news,Vanderbilt, University of Richmond, NCAA bracket, Welcome Home Military Ball, Ft. Campbell Army Rangers,101st Airborne Division, 327th Battalion

There’s no Cinderella but there will be a ball, and you can help make sure deserving members of the 101st Airborne Division’s 327th Battalion based at Fort Campbell have the time of their lives.

At last week's Brentwood City Commission meeting, Police Chief Ricky Watson shared a communication he had just received from the unit’s commander, LTC Joe Ryan in Camp Blessing, Afghanistan. Brentwood and its residents have supported the unit in many ways during its deployments to that country and Iraq.

“We are not immune to loss in the last month,” Ryan emailed the chief on March 6. Fifteen members of the unit “have sacrificed their lives in support of their brothers in arms, their unit and their country” on this most recent deployment, Ryan shared. As if that’s not sad enough, he added that two U.S. Rangers attached to the unit have also lost their lives.

There’s good news. The unit is coming home soon and a special Welcome Home Military Ball is being planned at the Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Center.

Donations are being sought to sponsor each soldier and his or her spouse so they can attend the June 24 event. Sponsorships are $100.

Watson tells me he is donating $200 so two couples can attend and challenges other Brentwood residents to do the same.

I’m in, are you?
