Want to know what Leadership Brentwood class member was the target of a murder attempt, and what one let Reese Witherspoon have her role in “Man in the Moon”? I’m here to tell you.
If you missed last week’s column that shared “interesting facts” about LBW’s Class of 2012, you can click here for background. If you want to learn more about the class members below as well as the rest of the class, click here.
Who was offered a full scholarship to the Pittsburgh Institute of Art? Matt Boyd, who also has run the Chicago Marathon twice, in 2002 and 2004.
Who once headlined a concert at the Kennedy Center? Educator Deb Enright.
Who was once a target of an attempted murder? Keely Hall, VP at First Bank, tells me it’s not quite as exciting as it sounds at first glance, but still … Keely was on a mission trip in Mexico when someone decided he must be a “rich American” and targeted him. Luckily, all ended well.
Who auditioned for the movie Man in the Moon – the movie that launched Reese Witherspoon’s acting career? That would be Tiffany Jones, another of Brentwood’s best bankers. Tiffany shares that a friend talked the then-17-year-old into going to the open casting call. She didn’t get a role but she did get a great story to tell (and is just as hot as Reese, of course).
Who was a SEC football coach at South Carolina? Zac Keiper coached the Gamecocks under head coach Brad Scot during the 1998 season. “Unfortunately the team went 1-10 that year, and Brad’s and Zak’s coaching careers were short….”
Who with his son won the 2-on-2 tournament at a University of Kentucky basketball camp, beating 27 other father/son teams? Habitat for Humanity’s Steve Lewis, who also played on the 1968 Glasgow, Ky. high school team that won the State Basketball Championship that year.
Who staffed the bill to bring the Amber Alert to the State of California, which is credited with saving numerous lives of abducted children? Dr. John Lowry, who now with his wife Melissa, has two young children of his own.
Who hosted Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex (Queen Elizabeth’s youngest son) for both a formal brunch and a 12-person dinner? James Story, when the prince was campaigning to raise U.S. funds for the Duke of Edinburgh Award. Ah yes, but did James get an invitation to Edward’s nephew’s wedding this summer? I think not.
Who was a bellhop at Loew’s Vanderbilt Plaza Hotel during his college years and got to meet “a ton of famous folks”? Josh Terry. And among the people he hung out with was boxer Evander Holyfield – “after his ear was gnawed off by Mike Tyson!”
Who had her ears were pierced on the day she was born? That honor goes to Amanda Garber. I hope she gets an employee discount for earrings at Costco, where she serves as marketing manager!
Insiders' Guide to the Gridiron Love high school football? Then I hope we’ll see you tonight at the August BHP Night at the Library, when head coaches Ron Crawford, Ralph Potter and Joe Rietveld will talk about their 2011 teams, their competition and, hopefully, a little bit about themselves too.
New City Commissioner Rod Freeman – who also happens to be the only commissioner in city history who has played both professional basketball and football – will moderate.
It starts at 7 sharp in the Brentwood Library. Join us!
What a journey it’s been And finally, I’d like to say Happy 25th anniversary to my husband Larry, who has put up with me for a quarter of a century.
During that summer of 1986, he hiked most of the Appalachian Trail and I got a job in California. I met him in Connecticut, where he proposed in the Hitching Post motel. In Florence, Ala. over the course of the next three weeks, we planned a wedding – complete with a bluegrass band and kegs of beer despite my mother in Virginia’s best efforts to have it at a country club. On Aug. 23, we got married at 11, had a very fun reception and two hours later were in a Ryder truck headed west.
We only got as far as Adamsville, Tenn. – home of Buford “Walking Tall” Pusser – that first night. And minutes after arriving at some friends’ house, which they let us borrow for the night and where they had left a bottle of Champagne to celebrate, I burst into tears.
Needless to say, they dried quickly, and 25 years, two sons, one dog, four houses and many memories later, we’re looking forward to the next 25. Well, I am at least. I figure if he gets happy feet, he still has 711.5 miles left to finish the trail and to reach Maine.
That should give him plenty of time to think about how good he’s got it…
