Brentwood Home Page news reports The Hendersonville Labor Day Invitational Soccer tournament was the site of three contests for the Lady Bruins. Starting on Saturday, the Lady Bruins played three games against competition from the Memphis area. On Saturday, the Lady Bruins played the St. George Gryphon's the A/AA 2009 State Champions. The game opened with each team trying to determine the strengths of the other and play was mostly between the 18's. Goals by the Lady Bruins were scored by Carly Overmyer (2), Karli Crosby (1), Meg Howard (1). The scores were all assisted. The game was highlighted by crisp play from the Lady Bruins who were prepared to deal with the Gryphons passing and speed. The lone score by the Lady Gryphons came late in the first half on a scramble for the ball just inside the box. The defense banded together and shut out the Gryphons for the remainder of the game.
The Sunday game was against the Lady Dragons of Collierville High School. The Lady Dragons scored within the first minute of play on an amazing goal from approximately 35 yards out on a free kick set up by a Lady Bruin foul. This would be the beginning of an intensely physical game. The Lady Bruins scored on an Audrey Howard goal with an assist by Kelsey Neely approximately 20 minutes into the first half. Around the ten minute mark Karli Crosby scored on a well placed assist by Audrey Howard. At the end of the first half, the score was 2 to 1. In what can only be described as an out of control game there were fourteen fouls on the Lady Bruins and two on the Lady Dragons. Additionally, each team had two yellow cards. With approximately seven minutes reamining in the game Audrey Howard scored the final goal of the evening on a move along the end line and a well place shot.
The Monday game was against the Briarcrest High School Lady Saints. The Lady Bruins scored first at approximately the 19 minute mark by Karli Crosby on an assist by Cammy Gilfillan. The score remained 1 to 0 until Karli Crosby scored from an assist by Audrey Howard. At the half, the score was 2 to 0 Lady Bruins. The second half was back and forth with Carly Overmyer scoring on an assist from Ludy Pater. The defense make key plays and stops to protect the goal during the second half. The Lady Saints would not be denied and with 35 seconds left the Lady Saints scored on a set play from a free kick.
For the weekend the Lady Bruin defense would bend but not break. The backline is anchored by Kelsey Neely, and supported by Kori Bates, Emily Thornton, Erica Ward and Catherine Hissam. The goal was protected by Katie Starr and Megan Nugent.
Up next on Thursday, the first district game with Centennial at Centennial starting at 7 p.m. The following Saturday, September 11, 2010 the Lady Bruins will travel to Cheek Park to face the Franklin Lady Rebels in a key district game also.
