District 11 ranking was on the line at the “Battle of the Woods” Tuesday night when the Lady Bruins (4-3) hosted the Lady Raptors (3-2) at Chris Kingsborough field at Brentwood High School.

The Lady Bruins, who were 2-1 in district play, went up in the first two minutes when junior Meg Howard put it past the RHS goalie, Rose Hull, off a cross from the right by junior Cammy Gilfillan.  Sophomore Mary Stuart Schwarz scored the second goal within two minutes working her way through a swarm of Ravenwood players.

With 31 minutes left on the clock the Lady Raptors, also 1-1 in district play, joined the Bruins on the scoreboard with Caitlin Boone’s shot off a cross from Emma Rose.

The remainder of the half was equally played on both sides of the field with the goalies being challenged but achieving multiple saves.  The Lady Bruins center defense of Morgan Ballek and Kori Bates helped hold off the pressure from the Raptors.  Outside Erica Ward, Catherine Hissam and Kelsey Moore kept forwards at bay.

The Lady Raptors defensive Elise Rothenberger and Maddie Lindley pressed back on Bruin runs and kept the shots on goal to a minimum.

The score remained 2-1 at the half.

Early in the second half, Howard scored her second goal off a cross from junior Lena Nash.  Howard, just a few minutes later, completed a hat trick when she worked her way through the Ravenwood defense and scored her third goal.

The Lady Raptors rallied and brought the ball to the Bruins’ end of the field for a fifteen minute period pummeling BHS goalie Kat Lee with shot after shot.  Lee grabbed, punched and dove to save a series of 12 shots in the second half.

One shot coming hard from the left by Haley Lemasters made it past Lee with 7:30 left in the game.  Lemasters shot came from a cross by junior Shelby Todd.

The Bruins final goal came in the last minute of the game by Schwarz off an assist by Gilfillan.

The final score was Bruins 5 and Raptors 2.  Brentwood travels to Independence High School on Thursday in their next district game.  The Lady Raptors will take on John Paul II on their home turf on Thursday.
