Brentwood Home Page news reports Brentwood’s lacrosse team played its quarterfinal game at Vanderbilt’s turf field on Saturday, and left the field with a 13-5 victory over Farragut and the Bruins’ first Division I playoff win in school history.
Following a loss at home to Memphis University School, Brentwood secured the No. 2 seed in the West by having beaten Christian Brothers and Houston. A 2- 1 division record gave them the opportunity to play the No. 3 seed in the East division.
Farragut secured the No. 3 seed by beating Baylor and Ravenwood, and losing to McCallie and MBA. Ravenwood was 0-4 in the division and missed the playoffs for the first time in school history.
The Bruins did not see the Farragut Admirals during the regular season and weren’t sure exactly what to expect, other than a competitive team that beat some common opponents by similar scores. The Admirals scored first on a nice play from two of the midfielders. Brentwood answered less than a minute later and went on to score three more to take a 4-1 lead.
The Bruins continued to control the flow of the game as they took a 6-2 lead into the half. Brentwood Coach Chuck Catterton stressed continued pressure and no let up to his team during the break. He did not want to give the Admirals a chance to get back in the game. The boys heard the message and pushed the lead out to 9-2 before Farragut scored their third goal to make it 9-3 at the end of three.
The Bruins remained in control both offensively and defensively as they finished off the Admirals in the fourth quarter.
Brentwood has made the Final Four in Division 1 and has to beat Montgomery Bell Academy to get to the championship game. Championship weekend is next week in Nashville when the Bruins will play MBA and McCallie will play MUS on Friday, May 13. Championship Game is Saturday, May 14.
MUS 6, Brentwood 3, April 30
The last regular0season game came against divisional rival and last season’s state runner-up MUS. The game was played at the friendly confines of BHS, but the outcome was a 6-3 loss. Brentwood has not had luck on their side when they played at BHS this season as they were 0-3 in games played at BHS and 10-1 when they played on the road or at Crockett.
This game was expected to be a close contest between two quality teams, and it proved to be a great game start to finish. If you like defense, this game showcased two of the best in the state. Brentwood scored first on a goal from Patrick Gill, and MUS answered before the end of the quarter to make it 1-1.
Both teams were struggling to get quality shots on offense and each were playing relatively mistake-free defense. MUS scored following a Bruin penalty in the second quarter to go up 3-1, and squeezed another one past goalkeeper Ross English to take a 4-1 lead at the half.
The Bruins played MUS 2-2 in the second half, but just could not put enough shots on goal to cut the lead. The Bruins outshot the Owls overall, but only 11 of their 26 shots were on the goal. Each team’s goalie had 8 saves as 14 of MUS’ 22 shots were on goal.
Brentwood’s Sam Wudel won the face off battle with 9 wins and only 4 losses. Scoring for the Bruins were; Gill, Manning, Plisco 1 goal each, Hargis and Colin Hart 1 assist each.
Brentwood 13, Father Ryan 4, April 18
Brentwood has developed a healthy rivalry with Father Ryan over the years, and although Ryan has moved down from Division I to Division II and the Bruins have moved up, the game is usually a competitive battle. This game was no different, but the Bruins had too many athletes and too much offensive fire power for Father Ryan to stop. The Bruins won the game 13-4.
The game started slowly and halfway through the first quarter it was 2-1 Bruins. The Irish took a couple of penalties and Brentwood scored with a man advantage to push the score to 6-1 by halftime. The Irish could manage only three shots in the first half as the Bruins created several turnovers in the Ryan offensive end.
Father Ryan was very good on face-offs as the teams split the 20 draws 10-10. The Irish also played tough defense with their long poles and forced the Bruins to score seven of their goals without an assist. The Bruins were just too strong overall on both offense and defense for the Irish to stay close.
The Bruins scoring was led by Patrick Gill as he scored 6 goals on 12 shots and added 1 assist. Sam Wyatt had a goal and 4 assists. His assists were to four different Bruins. Also scoring were McConnell 2 g, Hargis 1g, 1a, Manning, Springer, Richardson all with 1g, Connor Hart 1assist.
MBA 12, Brentwood 7, April 13
Brentwood’s lacrosse team traveled to the West End to play MBA and face their second big challenge from a Tennessee eastern division team. Once again, while playing hard, they came up short and took their third loss of the season by a 12-7 score. Earlier in the season, the Bruins played a tight game with McCallie, but couldn’t come up with the win. MBA has been a Division 1 power since Tennessee lacrosse began playing the state championship in 1989.
After several minutes of each team feeling out the pace of the game, the Bruins struck first on a goal by Ben Manning. However, MBA took control for the rest of the quarter and scored three times to make it 3-1 at the end of one. An unfortunate illegal stick penalty was called on the Bruins to begin the second quarter which gave MBA a man advantage for the first three minutes of the second quarter. The Big Red capitalized by scoring twice to go up 5-1. The Bruins seemed a bit deflated and gave up two more as MBA finished the first half with a 7-1 lead.
The second half was a different story as the Bruins continued to compete. In the end, Brentwood outplayed and outscored MBA in the second half 6-5 but it was not enough to overcome a 7-1 hole.
Scoring for the Bruins were: Gill 3g, Wyatt 2g, Akbari 1g, 1a, Manning 1g. Ross English had 10 saves in the loss.
Brentwood 10, Houston 5, April 10
The Bruins played a West region divisional game vs. the Houston Mustangs at Crockett Park and came away with an easy 10-5 win. Houston has been playing in Division I since the 2006 season, but has struggled against the best teams over the past few seasons. 2011 has been no different for the Mustangs.
Brentwood jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first quarter and cruised to a comfortable win. The score at halftime was 6-3, and 8-3 at the end of three quarters. The Bruins took 48 shots in the win as Houston managed only 21 shots for the game, 11 of which came from one player.
Defensively, Ross English had 11 saves and Colin Hart picked up 11 loose balls.
Sam Wyatt led the way in scoring for the Bruins with 3 goals and 2 assists. Other Bruins scoring were: Connor Hart 3g, Gill 1g, 1a, Manning, Richardson, Burnett each with 1g, Springer, McConnell and Colin Hart, 1 assist each.
The Brentwood Bruins Lacrosse Team is making school history. They are headed to the State D1 championship weekend, and will play MBA in the semi-final game Friday, the 13th at 5pm at Father Ryan School. The winners will advance to the championship game to be played on Saturday.
