Local church invites all to Sunday celebration By SUSAN LEATHERS Brentwood Home Page If you can't wait until the Fourth of July to see fireworks and sample some homemade ice cream, you're in luck. Harpeth Hills Church of Christ kicks off the season for patriotic events Sunday with its annual celebration, this year pegged "One Nation under God, Indivisible."
The free summer celebration that's open to all began 10 years, inside the Old Hickory Boulevard church. The Tennessee Army National Guard Band performed and the tradition of serving homemade ice cream was launched, but there were no fireworks.
But with a 20-acre campus and a commitment to be an active part of the community, the event moved outside and has grown ever since, the church's deacon of outreach Dan Jordan explained.
Fireworks were added six or seven years ago, he said.
This year music will be performed by the Williamson County Community Band under the direction of Ken Krause of Brentwood.
"We've had three different bands, the Tennessee Army National Guard Band, the Air Force Band and the Williamson Community Band over the years," Jordan said. "We just sort of rotate them around."
"We feel like a part of our mission is building relationships," Jordan said, and over the past decade they surely have. He estimates recent years have brought up to 700 or more people to the campus, located at 1949 Old Hickory Boulevard just east of Hillsboro Road. "We can accommodate a lot more if they come."
Jordan promises there will be enough ice cream for all too. This year in addition to the buckets being churned by church members, Mark Harless of Marble Slab Creamery will bring plenty too.
"They have assured me we'll have more than enough for everybody," Jordan said. Asked if there was a church member whose concoction is always the first to disappear, he refused to answer. "If I had to name somebody, I'd get in trouble."
Jordan said traditionally the concert has been held on the Sunday right before the Fourth of July. Since this year's holiday falls on a Tuesday, Harpeth Hills decided to move it up a week so that people traveling for the holiday wouldn't miss it.
The only thing you have to bring is a lawn chair and your friends and neighbors, Jordan said.
The event begins at 6:30 with the fireworks as the grand finale around 8:30 p.m |
