When Dave and Sharon Ramsey moved from their regular-old house in Brentwood to a hilltop manse in Franklin’s Avalon, I have to admit I was sad. I had always loved how the Financial Peace founder, author and syndicated radio host and his family had kept it real despite experiencing great success helping others learn to live within their means.
But I’ve changed my tune. Unlike many who live in huge houses and never let a stranger inside, the Ramseys have opened their magnificent home to many organizations since their move and by all accounts deserve a Host and Hostess of the Year award many times over.
They recently hosted the Brentwood Cool Springs Chamber Foundation’s STAR Gala Patrons Party. Tuesday night it was the Table Hosts party for Friends of Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt. Last year they hosted the Brentwood Library Foundation fundraiser – and are set to host this year’s event on April 14th as well.
In Tuesday night’s driving rain, Dave personally held a large umbrella over each of the 60 or so guests at the Friends event as they made their way to the shuttles that took them to their cars after Sharon bid each goodbye at the door
Loved that.
Speaking of the Friends event, two women attending deserve Moms of the Years awards. I already knew Brentwood mom and good-deed-doer Sheila Bullock had birthed four kids in quick succession just a few years ago, but when I took her picture with two new friends at the Table Hosts event, I learned even more.
Sheila was talking with Sheila McCarty and her daughter-in-law Stacey McCarty. During the conversation, Sheila B. and Stacey M. discovered they both had had four children in four-and-a-half year time periods and in the same order -- boy, girl, boy, girl.
The late humorist and newspaper columnist Erma Bombeck loved to say she looked the way she did because of the “baby weight.” She just never mentioned that her children were then in their 20s.
Sheila and Stacey are proof positive you can keep your figure and sense of humor too -- even if you have had four kids in four years.
As soon as I get rid of the baby weight I’m carrying after the birth of my two young sons, I’ll be right there with them.
Minimum wage v. babysitting I’m happy to announce that my business partner Kelly Gilfillan has agreed that we should pay ourselves minimum wage so that I don’t have to give up my BHP gig to babysit for a living.
Seriously, I was surprised so many people thought I really was giving up Brentwood Home Page to start a third career as professional babysitter after reading Monday’s column.
“Real talk” time as son Thomas says. I love my boys and can’t wait to be a grandmother but think I’ll leave the babysitting to the younger generation – despite the going rate of $12 to $15 an hour.
Finally, I got an email from soon-to-be-retired Brentwood Fire Chief Kenny Lane Tuesday. His “signature” line included this:
“Character is doing what's right, even when no one is looking.”
Loved that too. |
