Local guild's reach goes round the world Brentwood Home Page news reports In 1981, a group of about eight ladies met at the Nolensville Methodist Church and formed the Cumberland Valley Quilt Guild, an “off-shoot” of the Tennessee Valley Quilts’ Association (CVQA), which had been formed in 1980. Two short years later, the ladies of the CVQA hosted the National Quilt Show in nearby Bellbuckle, Tn. -- and the guild they formed has not slowed down in all those years.
One of the local quilt guild’s many projects is making “Quilts of Valor” for injured soldiers and veterans. Quilts of Valor are made from blocks signed by the public and then combined into an autograph quilt to be presented to a deserving serviceman or servicewoman.
The guild’s Soldier Quilt Committee will have QOV blocks for the public to sign at its Williamson County Fair booth, August 5-13. Committee members invite the public to stop by to both see a completed autograph quilt and to sign a block.
Committee members to date have made and given 951 quilts to veterans as far away as Walter Reed Army Medical Center to Germany to local Tennessee veterans.
In addition to the Soldier Quilt Committee, the guild’s Charity Quilt Committee makes quilts throughout the year which are donated to organizations such as the Red Cross. Recently, 12 quilts were donated to the victims of the Alabama tornado and three were given to a family who lost their home during the flood.
A gift of 32 Comfort Quilts to the Franklin Police Department and Department of Children’s Services to be give to young domestic violence victims in the county resulted in the guild receiving the FPD’s “Partnership Award.”
The Cumberland Valley Quilters Association (CVQA) meets the 1st Tuesday of the month at 10 AM, at the First Presbyterian Church, 101 Legends Club Lane, Franklin. The evening guild meets the 3rd Tuesday at 6:30 PM at the Barnabas Center, Franklin. All quilters and anyone interested in possibly learning to quilt are invited to visit any meeting and hopefully become a member.
For more information about the CVQA, please contact Tammy Barfels, President, (Tbdann@aol.com) or go online at www.CVQA.com.
