Brentwood Home Page news reports A heat advisory is in effect for Williamson County throughout Monday and until 7 p.m. Tuesday, the National Weather Service says.
The National Weather Service alert for much of the Nashville area says that "dangerously hot and humid conditions will afflict most of the Midstate today and Tuesday."
High school football teams opened practice Monday, but only in shorts and not in pads. Brentwood Academy and Ravenwood both had early morning workouts before the temps rose, and RHS checked heat-index monitors and had extra water breaks.
Brentwood High was scheduled to practice in the late afternoon/evening, starting at 4 p.m. Monday.
A strong high pressure is focusing heat and humidity over Middle Tennessee, sending heat index values into the 105- to 113-degree range in the afternoons both days.
"These conditions represent a direct threat to the health and well-being of area residents on Monday and Tuesday," the NWS said.
Children, the elderly and people with chronic ailments are the first to suffer from the heat, the alert says. Heat cramps and heat stroke are possible due to prolonged exposure to heat.
If you must work or spend time outside, take extra precautions, the National Weather Service says:
* Reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening.
* Wear light and loose-fitting clothing when possible and drink plenty of water.
* Take frequent rest breaks in shaded areas or air-conditioning.
Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location, and heat stroke is a 911 emergency.
During the night, there will be little relief, with low temps dropping only to the mid-70s. The heat is expected to ease by Wednesday.
