By CHELSEA BLACKBURN Brentwood Home Page With warmer weather comes the first pick-up of fresh produce from local farms to families who have bought CSA memberships. Delvin Farms, located in College Grove, offers a CSA membership with many locations to pick up. One of those in past years has been Brentwood High School and the partnership continues.
The first pick-up at Brentwood High occurred last week, and it was a great success. Thirty-two families are participating in this year's BHS/Delvin CSA, and the produce they received last week was bountiful despite being early in the season.
“Our first share consisted of spring crops grown on our farm in College Grove: red and green lettuce, strawberries, broccoli, Swiss chard, red kale, garlic, and onions,” Liz Delvin said. “In the next few weeks we will be adding cabbages, cauliflower, squashes, tomatoes, heirloom kales, rainbow chards, and new potatoes.”
While those who have a CSA membership reap the benefits of fresh produce, Brentwood High counts on the CSA as a large fundraiser. The first year the partnership raised $1,600 that went to Brentwood High's Parent Teacher Organization. With the increase in families this year, that number jumps to $2,050, reports Julia Ozburn, the coordinator of the CSA on the Brentwood High side.
If you are interested in signing up for the Delvin Farms CSA, it is not too late. They are accepting applications through June 1. To learn more about Delvin Farms, the CSA, or the Farmer's Markets in which they participate, see www.delvinfarms.com
